Hi! This is Cleo Pasak. My husband just got orders to Okinawa. We are currently in Texas. He's been to Japan before and stayed for 4 years, but I've never been. Thank you so much for this site! It has eased my mind considerably! We are supposed to be there on February 28th. Thanks again - Cleo

Randy, Thanks for your Okinawa website. I was stationed at the former Naha Air Base (shared runway with the commercial Naha International Airport) from November 1964-May 1966 as a C-130 Crew-Chief. I really enjoyed my tour on Okinawa and the people were very f iendly. I spent much of my time in Southeast Asia due to the Vietnam war and always enjoyed getting "back home" to Okinawa. I am retirng at the end of 2000 from the Arizona Air National Guard where I am a full-time federal Civil Service employee. I serv as an F-16 Maintenance Quality Assurance Supervisor/Manager. I work with a friend of mine (who also is retiring)that was stationed at Naha Air Base with me and now we have been together for 35 years. We both have good memories of Okinawa and remember th fun times we had, along with the long, hard hours of keeping the C-130's flying. I am trying to locate some more photos of Okinawa that I can present at my retirement celebration party. I had a lot of beautiful pictures from my USAF days stolen when I as stationed at Davis-Monthan AFB in Tucson, Arizona. I still have the vivid memories, but not many pictures to show. Do you know of any sites that I could download some photos of the Okinawan people, cities, attractions (which have definitely changed i 34 years), maps of the island. I would appreciate hearing from you. Thank You. Jim Esbeck Tucson, Arizona E-mail: [email protected] [email protected]

Thank you for developing such a great site. I lived in an apartment over the Seibukan Karate School, just off Jagaru Road, and was delighted to find it actually marked on Map 3. I hope everyone planning to go will enjoy living there as much as I did. I al ays urge people to venture into the countryside and become aquainted with Okinawan people and culture. It's a wonderful place.

Thanks for the memories...my father and us served two tours on "the rock". Mid sixties and then again in the seventies...thirteen years altogether. The first tour was at Kadena AB, we lived on the top of a hill in a quonset hut, it was isolated...I wonder if it is still there? The second tour was at Naha AB. That base was given back to he Japanese wasn't it?? I remember the beginning of the reversion, US money converting back over to yen and half of Naha AB was being given back to the Japanese AF. Boy, lo g time ago...well, thank you again...Peace...Dawn

I'm a retired MGySgt and my wife and I were stationed there for six years (1st MAW Aviation Ordnance Chief). I enjoyed seeing the pictures you have of the island. Don't know if it's possible, but some photos of events like the Cherry Blossom Festival or the Friendship Festival held out on Gate 2 street would be nice for folks to view. Thanks for letting us look and remember. Jim & Jan Monk

My husband was in SF and we were stationed in Okinawa from 90-94. This was our first overseas tour and we didn't have a clue what to expect. I fought tooth and nail not to go. Myself and 2 children arrived on the island a month after my husband. I ste ped off the plane and immediately feel in love with Okinawa. When PCS time came I remember sitting in the plane on Kadena and crying. There hasn't been a day that goes by that I don't think of Okinawa and how I wish we could go back. I just happened up n your site and looked through your photo gallery of where we lived which was on Butner. We lived on the third floor of the towers (they were new) then. We then moved to single family housing down the street on Maryland Ave. My son attended Zukeran from indergarten to the end of second grade. Looking through your photos made me feel like I was back in Okinawa. Your site answers the questions that most of us have PCSing but have no one to ask. You and your family have done a wonderful job. I will be s re to visit again. Thank you...

The first time I was in Okinawa was August 1962 to April 1964. Then I was with 1st HARB (USMC) in the Sukiran Area. They were to heavy and were disband and then I was transferred to HQ-2-12 Marines also in the Sukiran Area. The next Time I was stationed with USA STRATCOM LL BN S from Oct 1971 to Jun 1976. I worked first in the USARIS HQ Building #1 in the Communication center. Then I went to work in the Golf Ball area, Fort Buckner in the Okinawa to Taiwan Cable Head. I returned to Okinawa again in Jun 1978 to Jul 1980 and was assigned to USACC-J S. I again worked in the Cable Head for a while and then was a Team Chief for a Maintenance team of the MW Radios and Multiplexers. I did that until they contracted 22 slots to NEC contractors and then I monitored them as a Contract Representative. I went to the all the Army Microwave Communication sites to work on the Radios and Multiplex equipment and to monitor the ontractors. I have ran across people that worked at Makiminato Telephone Exchange, Yadaki and Tengan sites from the WWW. All together I spent 9 and 1/2 years on Okinawa. I enjoyed Okinawa very much during my stay there. Okinawa is like my second country and I hope to visit there again soon. During my stay in Okinawa I belonged to the Okinawa Model Railroad Club. The club was first at Camp Kue and was moved to Zukiran under the bleachers close to the NCO Club and below the Topper Club.. I am looking for the following: John P. and Reiko Montoya (Old and dear friends) Please feel free to visit my WEB page or send me a e-mail message should you remember me, can help me in finding any of the above, or have a fond memory that you would like to post on my WEB page.

WOW! This is the greatest web site ever! I took computer courses at (TCL) Technical College of the Low Country here in Beaufort. So I've seen alot of web pages and this by far is the best. I was thinking about coming back to Okinawa this year but I have two teenagers in braces. Is there any navy/american orthodontists over there to treat dependents? Also I have a dog and two cats can we bring them over? Thanx

WE ALL LOVED IT AND FOUND THE CHANGES AT TORII VERY INTERESTING. WE DIDN'T HAVE A BEACH AT TORII WHEN WE WERE THERE. IT WAS A AN ENNA FIELD. IS THE ROYAL RESTAURANT STILL ACROSS FROM THE GATE AT TORII? THANKS FOR SUCH A GREAT WEB SITE. I RETIRED FROM THE TEXAS NATIONAL GUARD IN OCTOBER 1997. My third but last visit to Okinawa was on or about the end of July 1969. Assigned to 3rd MT Batallion, Quang Tri and was ordered home via sea vessel under Pres. Nixon's 1st early withdrawal. It was a site too good to be true!!Compared to what were eating before, the food was great and the woman were sweet. On a more serious note: I have been trying to remenber or find out what the name of the vessel (LST) my batallion came back on? Additionally is there any source listing all companies, batallions, regiments and other support groups that were part of the 3rd during Vietnam through the present? Any info or advise you can offer, would greatly be appreciated. If there is any oipportunity to be a represenative or contact for the 3rd in the North-East area- my assistance and time is at your disposal! Semper-Fi Ray Perna

Should I add anything: Truth about career pensions

Comments:
Your military pension . . . Do you know? 1 - That approximately 300-600 no-fault divorces each month (involving career and veteran military members) cause those individuals financial hardships when they discover that they are NOT getting the retainer pay they were told they would be getting. 2 - It is not a pension because it is not vested at anytime during your military career. 3 - It is not a bank account, IRA, annuity, or gift that can be divided or borrowed against during your active career service (or even when you are retired after 20 plus years of honorable service). 4 - It is not property because it can not be divided, nor have you ever paid any property tax during your active service career as if it were property, nor can you place it in your will, so that upon your death it can go to your next of kin. The govern ent stops payments to you when you die. 5 - Only the no-fault court judge considers it as BOTH property and income and partitions it accordingly for Both deduction considerations. The property division CHOICE helps the no-fault judge assure that the spouse will not impact the county welfare sy tem of the county in which they adjudicate divorces. It is called a Conflict of Interest! 6 - The IRS, DoD, Bankruptcy courts, State tax authorities (who elect to tax active military and veterans), and even the DFAS (that performs the automatic garnishments of the retainer pay as property as dictated by the court) considers the retainer pay as ONLY income! http://www.dfas.mil/money/garnish/fs-qa.htm 7 - It is a condition whereby the military (pentagon) pays the retiree past the 20 plus year time-in-service date a reduced amount of funds under the condition that in an emergency (or when congress decides) you can be recalled to active duty. The age li it is 62 (obvious such individuals would serve in a support function). 8 - The USFSPA Law (Section 1408, Title 10 USC established as PL 97-252 - 8 September 1982) and DFAS action states that upon the completion of a civilian spouse (wife) acquiring ten years of marriage congruent to the military members ten years of active service that upon her completion of divorce action the DFAS will automatically reward that s ouse each month with a percentage of the military members retainer pay for the remainder of life (payments stop only when the first of the two divorced parties dies). 9 - The military does not inform its troops of the problem the USFSPA presents to the veterans financial future. In fact recruiters, it is believed, deliberately go out of their way to NOT inform new recruits or that CBPO retention personnel do not prov de like data to those considering career service. 10 - It is estimated that somewhere between 80,000 to 100,000 have been effected (but The DFAS - Defense Finance Accounting Service) will not provide the total number effected in spite of the fact that they accomplish the garnishments! 11 - The amount of garnishment is determined by a formula that is figured on the military wage earned at retirement NOT the wage rate at the time of divorce (divorce at ten years of his military service - ie, Captain, and acquire garnishment funds 10 (mo e) years later at his retirement rank of Colonel). 12 - Congress has been indifferent to any consideration for changing the USFSPA law since 1982 yet it is content to increase incentives and bonuses to entice good people into a false career benefits promise. See this congressional letter http://pages.map. om/gordont/ltr8pay-is-income.htm 13 - The no-fault court will not allow any recourse to wrong doing by the spouse. All it takes is a statement of irreconcilable differences on her part and the military members pays for life. 14 - The maximum DFAS will garnish is 65% of your military retainer pay. You will then receive the 35% remaining yet will still be obligated to your oath of service to return to duty should congress call . . about 4,000 were recalled for Desert Storm! 15 - Most veterans (who know about the USFSPA) no longer represent the military as the unseen recruiter force they once were, but instead, are shamed by the lies of governmental authorities, the disrespect of courts toward those who honorably served for 20 years, and disgusted by the lackadaisical attitude and unappreciative demonstration of the civilian society they protected. Comments welcome. For more information dial up USFSPA into any search engine and/or see the web at http://www.seacoast.com/~gordont/ . Join us in our fight to right this wrong.

Just browsing through school alumni sites and wandered into Military Brats Registry, which led to much nostalgia pursuit. I did not recognize much from the current photos or base info because much has changed since 1967; however, your photos kinda look th same -- the steets, the buildings, and the landscapes. I don't mean to be critical, but the photos need something unique or to be closer up in view, maybe. If you'd like to fund a trip, I'll bring my camera and take some new shots...no? Really, I enjoyed being able to take a virtual look around, and I salute all the servicemen and families there. May your typhoon season be mild and your geckos be friendly. <>< Laura

Great site. Before I came here I used this site as a source for a lot of useful information. Now the site is pretty much useless to me, but I came back to ask a question that anyone who visits this guestbook can answer. If you live on Okinawa and receive the cable service be sure to email me at [email protected] if you know when All Japan or New Japan Pro Wrestling is on. Japanese pro wrestling is truly a joy to watch, much more so than it's american counterpart, which uffers from too much talk and not enough talent. Thank you and if asked if this is a great site I would say HAI which means yes(I know that was stupid).

Sir, Thank you for the up-to-date information. The site is very useful for my task, which is to provide information to an inbound marine. It is very well presented and easy to use. The only suggestion that I do have is the addition of marine oriented information. Things like, the Gate 2 curfew policy, the marine liberty campaign, and some MCCS Single Marine Program information. If any or all of the ideas that I have mentioned are ncluded in this site please excuse my hastiness, because I may not have gotten to these specifics yet or over looked them. Please allow me to reiterate that it is my opinion that the site is very well put together, maintained, and exceptionally displayed. Again, thank you for your source. Thank you so much for your time and effort! We will be leaving the States for Kadena in about seven weeks and your site has given me lots of insight into what to expect. Perhaps something that everyone should have info on is how they decide whether you qu lify for 2, 3, or 4-bdrm housing. We have two children and have a 3bdrm here, but I know that may change once there. I don't know how they plan on putting two little ones (both under three) in one bdrm with bunkbeds. That is really my biggest concern. Tha ks again!

Thanks for a very interesting site. I haven't gotten to all the photos yet, but the ones I have seen have been lots of fun. I was on Oki from 1980-1984. Attended both Kubasaki and Kadena High Schools. I now serve as the Director of Alumni Affairs for the Kadena High School Alumni Association. Obviously I and my alumni would like to see some pictures of Kadena High School. The pictures of Kubasaki were great. They've added on to the school since I was there. I think we'd also be interested in some other places in and around Koza. For instance, Fukuhara's music store, and some of the other clubs if they're still around (8 Beat, Apple House, Manhattan's, Pianisimo.) Thanks for your great site. I've sent the URL to our web master to link with ours. Jack Canavan (Kadena HS 1984)

The first time I went to Okinawa was in 1960 with the 1st Bn 3rd Marines and was stationed at camp Schwab. We lived in one story concrete bays with 40 marines to a bay. No air conditioning just fans. Henoko was just outside the gate and beer at the EM c ub was a dime. The next time I was in Okinawa was again a Camp Schwab as an amtracer in 65 on my way to Vietnam. The changes after five years was astounding as everything was paved. The road ended at Camp Schwab and NTA nothern training area was the only thing except for some small villages further north. I am sure I woulod notknow the place. Thanks alot for the t ur Marv Folkerts

Someone in Sponsorship Training suggested that photographs of government furniture be included on the site so that individuals stateside will get an idea of what is available. Again, many thanks for maintaining this extremely helpfu site.

In 1958-59 I was stationed at Div HQ, Camp Courtney, Tengan Village, a mosquito infested mud hole. 44 men per quonset hut, mud streets and a slop shute. Sure looks different now. I was in 3rd MarDiv Security Platoon/Honor Guard for 13 months. Div Commande was Gen David Shoup, hero of Tarawa. We called him "Uncle Dave" and he knew each one of us by name. Thinking about "The Rock" sure brings back memories. I occasionally walked guard around Div HQ which was a 1 story wooden bldg of about 10,000 sq ft then. One night about 0300 while checking for locked windows I spotted a file folder on a desk stamped in big red letters, "TOP SECRET". I called for the offic r of the day who called Uncle Dave who ordered every staff officer on the base out in Class A tropicals in 15 minutes. Funny as hell. Is Camp courtney still there or have all the units consolidated into one base now? Great web site. Former Pfc Jack Jump PS: I get a chuckle. I run a Medical Equipment business now and I have a retired USMC Brig Gen working for me as a salesman. Great guy but the worm has turned.

The first time I was in Okinawa was August 1962 to April 1964. Then I was with 1st HARB (USMC) in the Sukiran Area. They were to heavy and were disband. I then was transferred to HQ-2-12 Marines also in the Sukiran Area. I went to the all the Army Microwave Communication sites to work on the Radios and Multiplex equipment and to monitor the contractors. I have ran across people that worked at the Fort Buckner Tech Control, Makiminato Telephone Exchange, Yadaki and Tengan sites from the WWW. I am looking for the following: Yoshiko Taira (Kaiko) who was my wife. DOB 10/10/41 Born Nakijin, Okinawa Rinko Taira Age 48 (Brother) Their family register was maintained in Nakijin, Okinawa The last family address the last I know was 131 Ban Aza Furugima, Naha City, Okinawa John P. and Reiko Montoya (Old and dear friends) Please feel free to visit my WEB page or send me a e-mail message should you remember me, can help me in finding any of the above, or have a fond memory that you would like to post on my WEB page. I was in I 3/3 in 1951 and we made landings on Okanawa and Iwo. In the pictures of Iwo I think that I recognized the airfield there had been some work on it but it had not been used and that is as far as we got from the beach. We could not go off the road rear Surabachi because of the unexploded ordinance. We spent most of our time trying to find a cool place to sit down. On Okanawa we backloaded offshoer and all that we saw was a clubhouse and pear at white beach. Semper Fi

My first tour of duty on Okinawa was in 1959-60. The tour, without family, was 13 months and there were few amenities, but it was a great tour of duty. In fact, I was with 1/5 when we opened up Camp Schwab by Henoko. We were redesignated 1/3 and had the dubious honor of being the very first battalion sized unit at Camp Schwab. At that time, Henoko was a very small fishing village with about 20 small wooden buildings. Those buildings included the "Bar Cherry" which became a home away from home.

Guy, Great site!! I left a 3yr Oki tour in July, 97 w/3d Div. The pictures are great and really bring back a lot of good memories. My family really enjoyed Oki. My last base was at Schwab w/CAB and that was also my favorite camp on island. Thanks for the emories! If I think of anything to add I'll send you an e-mail. s/f John

Glad to see there is a web site for Okinawa. Good job! This obviously took hours ! As a web site designer myself, I would recommend making the text smaller (esp disclaimer & thank-you's) and putting links together in a more organized fashion. ...usually a ong the left. Try to minimize wordiness: a good web page is concise w/ clear links. Semper Fi

I spent 3 yrs of my life on the rock from 1981 to 1984. I lived on Camp Butler while working at the 18th TFW, MICAP Section of Base Supply. My time on the rock was spent golfing and going TDY to some wonderful places. I hope to return someday with my wife Rhonda so that she can see just how beautiful Okinawa really is. I would like to have some help tracking down some men that were stationed with me if at all possible. The first guy that I would like to get in touch with is Tim Eberly of Corpus Christi, Tx. Tim liked his beer and Marlboro's and was one hell of a friend/co-worker. The other person I'd like to get ahold of is names Bobby Hall. Bobby had just gotten married in late 1983 of early 1984 and I believe he was from the central part of the United Stat s (that's the best I can remember). The other gentleman I'd like to find is Clarence Renfroe. Clarence was an African-American and one hell of a great dresser. You never seen Clarence unless he was clean as a whistle, shoes shined etc... Also I can't forget about the other 2 people on the rock that meant alot to me during my 3 years on the rock and they were my 2 supervisors Msgt. Barry Riley and Ssgt. Sherrie Strand. I can't for the life of me remember where Barry was from but Sherrie wa from the Virginia Beach area I believe. Please if you have any information regarding any of these wonderful people I spent part of my youth with, drop me an Email @ [email protected] Keep up the good work on this wonderful site because I wish that I would have had something like this back when I PSC'd to the rock!!!! I went to the all the Army Microwave Communication sites to work on the Radios and Multiplex equipment and to monitor the contractors. I grew up on Okinawa. Started in 1958 at Sukiran Elementary School, 5th and 6th grades. Lived in Futemna Housing Area until 9th grade. Went to Kubasaki Junior High School when it was located at the Naha Port Wheel Area. Way up on the hill next to the merican Counsulet. Kubasaki High School was located across the street, where I completed 9-11th grades. I was a member of the first graduating class of the new Kubasaki High School located in Kishaba Terrace, across the fields and streets from Sukiran E ementary. I now live in Hawaii and many of the Kubasaki High School Graduates live here. We frequently get together and remeber the good times. Our favorite bar in Honolulu is owned by two Okinawian ladies and the club's name is Nigori. Mike Connolly KHS Class of 1965

I'm also keeping my eye open for any civil service openings for a seasoned physician as istant on island... Hint! Hint! If you happen to hear of any.... HehHehHeh!!! Gimme a jingle! Back to reality.... thank you very much for keeping this site going. It is an absolute must for folks either already assigned or on their way to Okinawa - regardless of branch of service. I was wondering if you could help me. My brother Morris C. Wilson Jr., was stationed at Camp Foster and I think in the same unit as you. His tour was up a year and half to two years ago, and he decided to stay there. We haven't heard from him in a year and my family (especially my Mom)is panicking because we can't get in touch with him. Could you possibly help us? Or give me an idea on how to find him. I know he worked at a golf course doing landscaping in the Kadena, Naha area. If you find anything could you please write me back at my e-mail address. Thank you so much. Keisha Wilson

Thank you for the work you put into this site. My husband is retired from the Marines and served four tours there. I was lucky enough to be with him in 71-74. Our 4th child was born at Camp Kue Hospital(now Lester) He joined the Marines, was sent to Ok nawa, is now married to a local and lives there. He is a civilian working for MWR. It is a wonderful place and we hope to return some day. Your web site makes me want to return even more. I was curious, we lived at 1127 Chatan Housing area, we could s e the old commissary and exchange from our front door. I was wondering if that was still there.

First visit to Okinawa was 1971. Last visit was in 1973. Through all I was attached to Amphibious Squadron Five, USS Schenectady LST 1185. As "Gator Sailors" we spent as much time with USMC personnel as with Navy, steaming in Amphibious Ready Groups with members of 3rd Marines. I always enjoyed visits to Okinawa, and recently met a local stateside who reactivated my interest. I think you have an excellent site, and I expect to make many visits. was on the Rock from March 1962 to March 1964 the entire time was at Camp Hansen. March 62 to 63 was with 1/9 by the back gate. went to HQ 9th from 63 to 64. Favorite place on payday was Kadena Air Base they had some great drinks. Then we would come back to reality and head for Kin Village. The Kin Lu was my favorite spot. when time were tough i would take my last dollar and go to the China Gardens and get a wonderful plate of combination fried rice. oh the memories. Bought a new 305 Honda in 62 drove from one end of the island to the other. Now I know I would most probably get lost and I know I would never recognize it. Some of the girls taught a buddy and I how to play a card game called Hana Huda. Used to go to the village and play dumb with the girls working at the clubs. We would ask them if we could play the normal reply would be you no can play Hana Huda GI. Then e would play and lose . The Nassans would say you play for drinks. Mamasan can we play for drinks. Mamasan would agree and naturally we would win and get a free drink and next we would be called #10 because we were Americans and shouldn't know how to pl y their game. Semper Fi, Bob Hanna

Love the site. My husband and I were on Okinawa from 1959 to 1962 and now my son and his family are stationed on the island and it's great fun to view the pictures that you have posted. The scuba diving pictures bring back so many memories...we used to cuba and snorkel in what I have always considered some of the prettiest underwater areas of the world. And I was some sight...pregnant before pregnancy bathing suits were available and decked out in snorkle, mask and fins. I probably scared a lot of Oki awans when I would come out of the water. Not a pretty sight. :) Anyway, I enjoy visiting Okinawa via your site. Keep changing the pictures. Nancy Gard/San Antonio, TX

Should I add anything: Pls. add Iwo Jima news

Comments:
My wife and I visited Okinawa and Iwo Jima this past February with a group. I was stationed on Iwo for two years at end of WW II; and in 1950 flew B-29s out of Kadena during Korean War. Iwo has changed but little; Okinawa, on the other hand, has prosper d dramatically. We both fell in love with Okinawa and its people.

I have sent your site to Marines coming to Okinawa. All have responded that "it is better than the welcome aboard package". Anything that makes the PCS move easier, and eases the "fear of the unknown" is great. This site does it all.
