Just think, we’ve been waiting five months for one hour in our lives. So, was it worth the wait? Hell yeah.
We see Mulder in his apartment, twenty four hours before we last saw Scully, sitting before the panel of FBI directors in the season finale. He sits on his couch, with tears streaming down his face, playing with his loaded gun. He takes it out of it’s holster and puts it up to his head, just as the phone rings. Saved by the bell...
The person on the other line is Michael Kritchew. He tells Mulder that his apartment is being watched. Mulders’ eyes dart around the room until they rest on a tiny hole in the sealing right above his head. Dropping the phone immedatly, he grabs his gun and sprints upstairs to the room above him. There is a man there videotaping every move he makes. They both pull out their guns and shots ring out, just as we see the door closing.
A few hours later, Scully enters her dark apartment and goes into her bedroom and starts to undress. “Keep it going FBI women.” a voice says from the shadows. Scully freaks, and whips around to find Mulder sitting in the dark. “Mulder?! What are you doing in my bedroom!?” She demands.,p> Mulder explains how he has a dead man in his apartment, and how he was being watched for months, maybe years. He pulls out this long list of phone numbers and tells Scully how he found the man trying to burn it. They were all calls made out of the room dating back for two months. He also shows her this pass that he found with the dead men. It is clearance to get into the Pentagon.
So, Mulder and Scully devise a plan. Scully will identify the mans body as being Mulders. Mulder will then use the pass to get access to the Pentagon to see what he can find. (Now this seems strange to me, because they both know perfectly well that if an autopsy is done, everyone will know it’s not Mulder. So what’s the point? It will only buy them a few days at the most.)
When Scully identifies the body as being Mulders, she is called into the office of the head of the FBI, and is asked what she knows about Michael Krichew. She doesn’t reply at first, but then admits that she knows him, and that he informed her about an elaborate hoax generated to lead to Mulders demise. He sets up a meeting with her to appear before a panel of FBI directors later that day.
The scene then goes back to Mulders apartment, and Cancer Man enters. He walks around, looks at the chalk outline, and the blood stained floor, and picks up a photograph. It’s a picture of Mulder and his sister Samantha when they were kids. Then the unthinkable happens. Cancer Man starts to cry.
Scully makes a few phone calls to try to find out where that number was being called to. She traces it back to the FBI executive branch, but can’t pin point the exact person the call was made to. However, she does know that it’s possible the call could have been made to Assistant Director Skinner.....
Immedatly after, Scully gets a call from the scientist that examined the ice core samples taken from the ice around the alien body. He tells her to meet him right away, that there is something she needs to see. Scully finds that the cells from the ice core sample are forming into some kind of creature. Then, she gets this crazy idea. That the cells from the creature were injected inside her, to cause her cancer. Tests are done, and like always, she is right. Just as she is about to leave, she sees Skinner walking past the doorway. She runs after him, demanding to know why he was following her. He tells her that he knows she is lying about Mulders death, and in turn she accuses him of being linked to her cancer.
Meanwhile, Mulder finds Michael Kritchew in the Pentagon. “How did you get in here?” he asks. “Through the front door.” Mulder replies. Kritchew continues to tell Mulder that the pass he has gets him level four access, to anywhere in the Pentagon. Mulder decides to take advantage of the situation, tries to find the cure for Scullys cancer. Kritchew is detained by two solders for questioning.
Eventually, Mulder finds a warehouse. It’s some kind of filing system. He looks up Scullys name and finds a number. He looks up the number and finds a small vile. Convinced it will save Scully, he pockets it, and leaves the building, with Cancer Man watching him.
So, we come back to were the last show left us off. Scully is sitting before the panel of FBI directors, telling them about Mulders death. She manages to squeeze out a few tears to make it look convincing. The door creaks open, and Skinner walks in, holding a file that could expose their lie right then and there. Scully sands up. “I also have with me undeniable proof, that the men who put together the hoax, are also responsible for the cancer that has invaded my body.” Just as she puts the file on the desk, her nose begins to bleed, and she faints. Skinner catches her and yells, “Call a doctor!!”
Finally, we see Mulder with the Lone Gunman. He’s having the stuff in the vile tested to see what it is. Byers looks up at Mulder with sad eyes and says... “Mulder, it’s deionized water. Nothing more.”
To be Continued......
Well, this episode was awesome. It gets 5 out of 5. As long as Carter and Co keep writing these kinds of episodes, the X-Files will be on for a long time.
