Alien Implants

by Gabrielle Harbowy

Perhaps one of the most terrifying events in abduction lore is the implantation of small metallic objects into the body of the abductee. It seems to directly target our societal fear of physical violation, while suggesting that we are to the abductors no more than docile pets to be catalogued and returned to the wild.

Further study into the phenomenon reveals that the placement of implants varies across accounts, though common sites are the sinus cavities, navel, and gums. Differing beliefs about the function of these devices have also been reported: they may be used to track us, to control our thoughts, or even to provide us with telepathic powers.

In the past four seasons of "The X-Files", several implants have been discovered. From the cylindrical object found in the sinus cavities of teenagers in the Pilot episode to the small radiopaque fragments discovered in Duane Barry's gums and abdomen, to the microchip placed under the skin of our own Agent Scully's neck during her disappearance, this aspect of abduction lore has not been ignored. In Chris Carter's world, these objects are treated by the masses in much the same way they are in our own: scoffed at, ridiculed, and just plain disregarded. After all, as Dana Scully says, the answers are there. You just have to know where to look.

We live in enlightened times. Critical thinkers require proof, but what proof can there be of close encounters? The abductee hardly has time to pose for snapshots with the grays between rounds of grueling physiological tests, and so is rarely believed by the folks back home. Implants may be the physical evidence of abduction which we have been lacking.

In fictional accounts, the implant is removed and analyzed in a sophisticated laboratory. A bewildered technician emerges with wild eyes to announce that the object is composed of "unknown materials".

In factual accounts, however, the results are even more mystifying. There are cases of actual implants removed from individuals claiming a history of abduction. The objects have been found to contain common terrestrial metals, encased in an organic shell. This outer layer may be the body's own defense against the foreign object, or, as believers insist, may be the clever tool by which renders the implant undetectable by the human immune system.

Recovered implants are generally small, triangular objects with finely finished edges. They have been removed from hands and feet of abduction experiencers, and more have been discovered and x-rayed in the bellies and sinuses of other survivors.

What are these items? Are they truly calling cards from another intelligent species? Or simply stray pieces of shrapnel, imbedded during common injury? Only further study will lead us to the answers we seek ironically, by the same methods of scientific analysis and experimentation for which these devices may have been created.
