Yellow Cross gases, such as mustard
(distilled mustard,
nitrogen mustard) and
Lewisite, have the most dangerous surface effects and
disfigurement. Commonly known to the Allies as "blister gases," more
correctly as vesicants, the Yellow Cross gases attack any part of the
body with which they come into contact, inflicting burns and blisters
and deep, slow-healing ulcers of a most painful nature. Yellow Cross gases interrupt the normal processes and procedures of cell division in the tissues, and interfere with the protection mechanisms of the body by delaying normal cell replacement and proliferation. They also produce wounds that cannot easily heal. |
