Munitionsfahrzeug III/IV

Munitionsfahrzeug III/IV
The Munitionsfahrzeug III/IV (ammunition carrier) was specifically built to re-supply the Hummel self-propelled artillery, which could only carry 18 rounds. Usually a Panzer division was allotted a mobile heavy battery of six Hummel, with two ammunition carriers to launch a sustained bombardment. The Munitionsfahrzeugs were especially useful on rough terrain inaccessible to trucks. In all 157 were built.

In technical terms the ammunition carrier was identical to a regular Hummel, but without the heavy field howitzer. In place of the gun an armor plate was fixed to cover the gap on the front plate. The Munitionsfahrzeug also used the hybrid PzKpfw III/IV chassis.
