For several years unarmored half-tracks and trucks had
served as self-propelled carriages for light and medium
anti-aircraft guns. It was not until 1943 that the Czech
LT-38 chassis was used in a
purpose-built armored Flak vehicle. The tank's engine was
placed in the frontal part of the chassis, as with the
Bison Ausf M, and a fighting compartment was built at the
rear for a single 20mm Flak 38. The single gun arrangement
was certainly not enough for the intended task. Only 162
of these converted vehicles were built. As it turned out,
the Flakpanzer 38(t)s were often used against soft-skin
and light armored vehicles in Russia instead of aircraft.
