Penobscot Community  Elementary School
Student / Parent  School  Information Handbook
Dress Code
Students are encouraged to dress in clothes which are comfortable and do not distract or disturb the learning process of others.   Students should dress appropriately........ie, no bellies showing,  no bare feet,  no ripped clothing,  no clothing with objectionable language or pictures.  Staff members have the last say on what is or is not appropriate
.

Clothing that is prohibited from school includes:
Any Tobacco Products                       Any Drug Logo's                 Inappropriate pictures or messages such as Co-Ed naked
Any Porn or Pornstar Brand names.      gestures                            Shorts are acceptable  depending on how long or tight they are.

Emergency Cards

The emergency cards are used to update our student files for the current school year.   It is essential that we have accurate information to get in touch with parents or guradians in case a student becomes ill or possibly injured at school.
Please include your correct mailing address and phone numbers on this card as we keep it next to our phones for quick references.

Faculty Rooms /  Main Offices
Becase of the confidential nature of many conversations or phone calls,  the office is not a place for general socialization or a parent meeting place.   Faculty members have the privilage of a lunchtime retreat with their colleagues,  and so the faculty or staff lunch room may not be used for purposes.   Parents are asked to remain in the front hall just outside the office during school hours, and will be assisted by the office staff there.

Food & Snacks
Children burn alot of  calories in their daily activities.   Please be sure to supply your children with a morning snack to keep them
" fueled up " until lunchtime.   The school kitchen does not provide snacks during the morning recess

Gum

Penobscot students are not allowed to chew gum in the building.  We have found a substantial amount of gum on the bottom of furniture throughout the building, indicating that some students are not responsible chewers.  We request that all gum be left at home.  Students choosing to chew gum at school will be reported and will receive appropriate dicipline for violating the rule of respect .

Hats
Penobscot Community Elementary School has a " NO HAT RULE ".  This means that
students do not wear hats in the building.  We fee that wearing hats in  class is distracting,  limits communications,  and is just concidered impolite.  We thank parents for their support on this rule.

Headphones & Personal listening devices

Personal CD ,  radio,  cassette players, or other personal listening divices are not allowed at school.
Students may bring these items to school  with a teachers permission and   play them on school audio equipment during appropriate times.   Thus
we encourage students to "Tune in " together     to music and not "  tune themselves out " individually.

Health
We recommend that children do not come to school if they appear to be ill.   it is advisable to keep your child at home if he / she  has a sore throat,  severe cold,  feaver, or rash.  If your child is absent due to illness but is able to do some school work,   please feel free to call the office and we will ask the teachers to provide your student with work to keep them up to date.
Our School Nurse is available on Tuesdays.  Please give her a call if you have questions about your childs health.

Fund Raising   ( policy )
The following policy was adopted by the Penobscot School Committee  ( 07/12/1993 ).  Applications for fund raising is available in the school office.
1.   All fundraising for school purposes shall be reviewed and/or approved by the School Committee in advance.
2.   The School Committee is legally vested with the determination of how funds are to be spent for school purposes.  The School
Committee shall likewise be responsible for determining how all monies received through a pre-approved fund raising will be
        spent
3.     All money raised through an approved fund-raising are to be turned over to the school Principal who shall promptly deposit
them into the school's checking account.   The Principal shall be responsible for keeping a separate accounting of all funds
raised,  deposited, and expended through the designated channels.

Photocopying

Because of the increasingly expensive equipment,  accessories and maintenance to run this equipment,   Students are no longer allowed to use the photocopy machines in the office or library.  They may obtain photocopied materials for research and reports,  but they must ask a staff member to make copies for them.

Recess

Recess is part of our elementary school program.  It allows children the opportunity to socialize and engage in physical activities.  All children will be expected to go outside for recess,  weather permitting.     We ask that all children be dressed for outside activities when they come to school.   For times of Snow, dampness,  or muddy seasons,  please send boots, hats, mittens and other appropriate clothing to school with your child.   For our younger students,   keeping an extra set of clothing available in your childs classroom is recommended.  Students may use the classroom during recess with the permission and supervision of a facility member.
Please note:  If a child is not well enough to go outside for recess, then he / she  should remain at home unless the school receives written permission from a childs physician recommending inside recess for specific reasons.

Sustained Silent Reading

Sustained Silent Reading is held  each day from 12:25 - 12:45  each day.    This is an important part of our school day when students at all grade levels are given the opportunity to read self-selected materials.  Staff members also read, providing adult role models to reinforce and foster a desire to read.  There is a strong link between reading profiency in school and the amount of time children spend on recreational reading.  Research shows that as little as 10 minuets each day of pleasure reading can make a difference in classroom performance.  We ask that parents not call the school during SSR unless there is an emergency.  This will help reduce distractions and preserve the quiet "MAGIC" of SSR.

Library
Penobscot Childrens Library, now on the main floor,  serves the students and staff with a comprehensive library program.  Students in K thru 6 receive instructions in library skills while students in  6th thru 8th can access online, the Blue Hill Public Library, George Stevens Academy and Maine Maritime Libraries in order to expand research skills.  We encourage  students, parents, preschoolers, homeschoolers, and community members to use the library.  It is open each day.

Due to the increasing difficulty of returning books at the end of the school year,   the last quarter period rank cards will be
held by the office until all overdue books have beel returned and or library fines paid for lost or damaged books.
