MIAMI, Nov. 14 (AP) -- Kevin Durant said it felt like Seattle won a world championship. Pat Riley sounded as if his championship feeling couldn't have been farther away.

And the Seattle SuperSonics were more than happy to ruin Dwyane Wade's comeback game.

Emeka Okafor had 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Bobcats, who dominated the punchless Heat. Playing again without Dwyane Wade, Miami often struggled to just get a shot off and dropped to 1-6.

NEW YORK, Nov. 11 (AP) -- Blowouts or squeakers, playoffs to preseason. You name it, the Miami Heat found a way to lose it.

Not this time.

Jason Williams made the go-ahead jumper with 19 seconds left, and the Heat earned their first victory of the season by beating the New York Knicks 75-72 on Sunday night.

"It was a much-needed win for us,'' center Shaquille O'Neal said. "We have folded under the pressure the last couple of games.''

Heat turns to Penny

Chris Perkins (PalmBeachPost.com)

Entering the season, few would have expected 36-year-old swingman Penny Hardaway to be a role model for the Heat through four games. After all, he hadn't played since 2005 because of knee injuries.

Nevertheless, coach Pat Riley said Hardaway exemplifies what the winless Heat needs tonight against Phoenix at AmericanAirlines Arena. Riley said Hardaway works hard, plays within the system and does his homework.

"I'm just trying to be the veteran out on the floor from the guard spot and make things happen, make plays happen," Hardaway said, "and be the best I can for my position defensively and offensively." Read more >>

SAN ANTONIO, Nov. 7 (AP) -- There was Manu Ginobili, hitting yet another 3-pointer for the San Antonio Spurs and scoring 25 points. And there were the Miami Heat, who looked as if, even if they'd had Dwyane Wade back, it might not have been enough.

"Ginobili is a handful,'' Heat coach Pat Riley said Wednesday night after his team lost 88-78 and fell to 0-4 this season. "He's unpredictable. It's hard to defend him.''

But, even adding Tony Parker's 23 points to the mix, Spurs coach Gregg Popovich wasn't ready to claim too much credit.

MIAMI, Nov. 4 (AP) --For a 10-minute stretch of the final quarter, the Charlotte Bobcats were downright awful, wasting every bit of a 16-point lead and giving the Miami Heat plenty of hope.

Over the final minute, the Bobcats were just about perfect - and made some history in the process.

Jason Richardson scored 29 points and the Bobcats forced two crucial turnovers in the final 37 seconds on the way to beating the Heat 90-88 on Sunday night. For the first time in the franchise's four-year history, the Bobcats are two games over .500.

MIAMI, Nov.1 (AP) -- For three days, the Miami Heat worked on defending plays the Detroit Pistons love to call for Tayshaun Prince.

Didn't matter.

Prince weaved his way to a career-high 34 points, matched a career best with 12 rebounds, and the Pistons pulled away in the fourth quarter to beat the Heat 91-80 Thursday night in the season opener for both teams.

The Pistons played without Richard Hamilton, who tended to a family matter. So Prince picked up the slack, going 13-for-23 from the floor, and the Pistons also got 19 points and 11 assists from Chauncey Billups.

Heat's Penny makes roster the Hardaway

By Michael Wallace (Miami-Herald)

The goal was the same for Penny Hardaway and Joel Anthony, but their climbs to get there were entirely different.

Aside from the equally long odds they faced, Penny Hardaway and Joel Anthony didn't have much in common 30 days ago, when they arrived for the Heat's training camp.

The two probably couldn't have come from more divergent paths.

Hardaway, 36, simply had hoped his once-chronically aching knees would prove sturdy enough after a two-year layoff to withstand perhaps one last shot to reclaim some NBA glory. Read more >>

Miami 0-7 in preseason

MIAMI (AP) -- When the Miami Heat return to the practice floor sometime Thursday, they'll have two simple tasks.

Forget about October.

Get ready for November.

Manu Ginobili scored 22 points on 6-for-7 shooting, and the San Antonio Spurs sealed a dismal exhibition season for the Heat with a 104-87 victory Tuesday night.

Miami finished the preseason winless (0-7) for the first time in the team's 20-year history.

"You put it all in perspective," Heat forward Udonis Haslem said. "Even though we're 0-7, it's not the end of the world. We've got a couple days to get ready for the first game and I think it's very crucial we get off to a good start."

NBA career on hold, he's reconnecting with U of M

By Dan Wolken
June 18, 2007

Nearly every afternoon in January and February, Penny Hardaway would come to the Finch Center and quietly train for a return to the NBA. But with every weight Hardaway lifted and every basket he shot, he wasn't just inching closer to a return to professional basketball.

In a way, he was coming home.

After years of barely being involved in the University of Memphis basketball program, Hardaway is beginning the process of reconnecting with the school and perhaps laying the foundation for a more official capacity once his playing career is over.

"I'm going to be involved until I leave this earth, because this is where I went to school," Hardaway, who will be 36 next month, said. "This is where I'm from."

.......

And Hardaway is not eager to concede retirement.

Though he said he was healthy last season, Hardaway found a decided lack of interest in him from NBA teams, including the Grizzlies. Hardaway said he would have even taken a 10-day contract just to prove that he could play again but found no takers.

"I'm going to do a better job of marketing myself this summer," he said. "Last summer, I thought that because I was healthy teams would just bring me in. I was fooled by that because it didn't work like that. This summer I'm going to let everyone know I'm back and ready and if they need to see me, I'll do individual workouts and they can get a better look.

"It won't be anybody giving me anything or sympathy. I'm going to show them I can still play. It's just getting in the door."

He's experienced the calamity associated with injury.

He's heard the commentary from critics doubting a comeback.

Penny To San Antonio? (article)

May 25, 2006 - Speaking to WPTY, the ABC affitliate in Memphis, former NBA All-Star Penny Hardaway spoke about his future in the NBA.

During the middle of the 2005-2006 season, the former University of Memphis standout and NBA veteran was traded from New York to Orlando only to be waived a few days later by the Magic.

"Right now, I'm waiting until the (playoffs) are over," said Hardaway. "Then I'm a free agent finally," So I really want to go somewhere where I can just show my talents, be involved and not just be on the bench. And I've just got to weigh those decisions once the season is over."

The teams he would be interested in playing for are all safe bets to be in the playoffs next season.

"Well home first of course, you know with the Grizzlies. The Lakers are interested, the Spurs. Ah, Miami and the Rockets. Those teams are on my list right now. All I have to do is make a phone call to come in and workout. And show them that I am healthy enough to play and to see where it goes from there."

No matter where he lands, Penny says he'd like to be a contributor. - Source

Traded back... but will be waived

Back in Orlando, but will be waived

Feb 25, 2006 (update) - Irony of ironies: Remember back in 1999 when former Magic GM John Gabriel did a sign-and-trade deal where he signed Penny Hardaway to a maximum seven-year $92 million contract and shipped him to Phoenix? Guess what? Seven years, three trades and countless knee injuries later, the Magic are paying off the final few millions of that very same contract. Talk about coming full circle: The Magic started a rebuilding project in '99 by dumping Penny's contract and they're starting a rebuilding project now by dumping Penny's contract. Source

Feb 24, 2006 - The Orlando Magic announced this morning that they have waived G-F Anfernee Hardaway. Source

Feb 22, 2006 - Steve Francis is headed to the New York Knicks, who acquired the three-time All-Star from the Orlando Magic on Wednesday for Penny Hardaway and Trevor Ariza.

Hardaway, a 12-year veteran, will be reunited with the team he broke into the NBA with in 1993 when the Magic acquired Hardaway and three first-round draft picks from Golden State for Chris Webber. Hardaway left Orlando after six seasons to sign as a free agent with the Phoenix Suns, who traded him to New York 4˝ years later in the deal that brought Marbury to the Knicks.

Hardaway played in only four games for New York this season and had been away from the team for several weeks, ostensibly to rehab his arthritic knees. It was not known if he planned to play for Orlando this season, nor was it certain whether Francis was to be available for the Knicks on Wednesday night for their home game against the Miami Heat.
