It all begins with Partridge telling the story of Tom and then it goes into the story. When Tom was a baby he was left on the bed of Squire Allworthy by one of the Saloon Girls. When asked who was the mother, Jenny Jones was the only name that came up. Jenny was asked if she was the mother and she said yes. She left town because of embarresment and the "father" was kicked out of town. The father just happend to be Partridge. Tom grew up to be a young and handsome man. Everybody in the town loved him. Also, Squire Allworthy's sister had a son about a year after Tom named Bliful, after his daddy. Bliful was hated by everyone in town. When Sophia Western was forced into marrige with Bliful, Tom protested and he was kicked out of town. Sophia decided to go where he was going. On the way out of town, Mrs. Waters was being robbed and Tom saw that and he made the bandit lose his gun. He then wanted to make sure Mrs. Waters was okay so he walked with her to the Inn in Upton. Sophia was walking with her servent Honor when the bandit tried to rob them but since he didn't have a gun it didn't work out. Then Sophia cousin, Harriet, came by and was just estatic that she was being robbed. Everyone but the bandit went to the Inn in Upton where they were greated by the Grumpy Mrs. Whitefield and the overly friendly Susan. When Sophia got there she was told that Tom was with a woman and so she decided to write the address of where she would be staying so when Tom found her she would turn him away. After they left the Inn, Sophia headed towards Miss Belle Aston's house. Belle was pleased to see Sophia but when she met Tom she thought that he was perfect for her so she worked out a plan to get Tom all to herself. When Harriet's husband comes looking for her, he gets into a fight with Tom. Mr. Fitzpatrick is thought to be dead and Tom is put in jail. During Tom's trail everyone but Mrs. Waters is there. Mrs. Waters then makes a grand entrance amd it is then that Squire recognizes her as Jenny Jones. So Tom is once again in the clear with Sophia but there is one more twist Jenny really isn't the mother. Well, if Jenny isn't who is?
