Transom - Holes Drilled Out -
More Problems Found
TRANSOM - Before
TRANSOM - After
Here is the starboard side of the transom.  I have removed the trim tabs and four (YES FOUR) transducers.  Why there were four I will never know.  Once I removed the mounting bolts, I found the wood was rotted inside the transom.  This meant I could just leave it or try to fix it.  The following pics will highlight those attempts.
I used a hole drill to cut out the holes you see here.  I carved out the rotted wood with a screw driver and a wood chisel.  I also used other tools to get as much wood out as possible.  I found two things, both  were bad.  #1 - The wood damage was not limited to the transom.  I found that wood was also used in the bottom of the boat.  I do not know how far this wood is used in the bottom but I guess I will find out.  #2  - The worse problems is this.  Someone that owned the boat before me screwed several bolts into the transom.  Some for no apparent reason.  Well, one of these bolts was screwed into the transom where a stringer meets the transom.  The person that did this was apparently not able to get the bolt to hold strongly so he ground the head off and used silicone to cover the bolt and any "gaps" he created.  Well, needless to say water was introduced to the transom AND the stringer through this hold.  I have been carving out rotted wood from the stringer through one of the holes I cut in the transom.  I have gone about 5" into the stringer and the wood is beginning to look better.  The fix for this is still to be determined.  The fix for the wood on the bottom of the boat is also yet to be determined.
Transom fixed and the boat in the painting bay.  The finish is very fair and it turned out suprisingly well!
First coat of paint on the hull.  I sprayned on Interlux Brightside Polyurethane paint.  It went on well and I had only three area that ran.  The good thing about this paint is that it sands well.  Next....wetsand the entire hull and put on the second coat.
Epoxy barrier coat and bottom paint going on.  It is finally taking shape!
