Who are the Sikhs?   
                                        

-The word Sikh means disciple or student

-Sikhs are students and followers of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of Sikhism

-Sikhism's central theological belief is that there is one God for all of creation

-Sikhism is a way of life that advocates the practice of holistic life experience - work, worship, service

-Sikhism is the fifth largest religion in the world
     -26 million Sikhs worldwide
     -Followers of religion are usually Indian
     -Physical features (turban and beard) have falsely led to assumption that Sikhs are followers 
      of bin Laden

-Sikhs believe in:
     -Tolerance: do not support discrimination for any reason
     -Everyone having equal status in the eyes of God
     -One universal God who accepts all spiritual paths
     -Respects all religions and every individuals right to choose
     -Against oppression and acts of violence such as latest attack of terrorists     
      upon the U.S.

-Over 300 hate crimes have been commited against innocent U.S. citizens who are believers in Sikhism since September 11th, 2001

-Sikhism recognizes the complete equality between women and men in all spheres of life: political, social, and religious

-Sikhs, like all Americans, stand united in the war against terrorism
