CONSTITUTION OF THE PENN SIKH ORGANIZATION

Articles of Constitution

Article I - Name
The name of this organization will be the Penn Sikh Organization, hereafter also referred to as 'organization', 'this organization,' or 'the organization. '

Article II - Purpose
This organization shall strive to enhance the awareness of Sikh religion, culture and heritage, and facilitate greater interaction among the members of the University of Pennsylvania community interested in Sikh religion, culture and heritage.

Article III - Membership
Section 1: Membership to the Penn Sikh Organization will be equally available to everyone affiliated with the University of Pennsylvania and neighboring universitites. There may not be any discrimination because of race, religion, political views, nationality, sex or any other such factor. The only requirement for membership shall be interest in Sikh religion, culture and heritage.
Section 2: An official member of this organization is one who has attended two or more meetings during one semester, and paid annual membership dues. The membership list will be kept updated by the Secretary.

Article IV - Officers
This organization will consist of four officers: President, Vice President, Outreach Liaison, and Secretary. All officers must be full-time, registered students of the University of Pennsylvania.

Article V - Responsibilities of the Officers
Section 1 - President:
It will be the duty of the President to call, preside over and adjourn all meetings of this organization. The President will also be responsible for performing other various duties and delegating any responsibilities not listed in this constitution.
Section 2 - Vice President:
The Vice President shall assume the duties and responsibilities of President if the President must resign from that position. The Vice President shall preside over meetings if the President is unable to attend, assuming the duties and responsibilities of President for that meeting.  All financial matters are the responsibilities of the Vice President. The Vice President will be the interface of this organization with Student Activities Council for all paperwork and will be the sole signatory for the funds of the organization.
Section 3 - Outreach Liaison:
The Outreach Liaison will be responsible for attending all University Minority Council meetings, APSC meetings, and keeping the community up to date with the organization's events.
Section 4 - Secretary:
The Secretary will be responsible for maintaining a membership list of this organization, keeping updated minutes of all meetings of the organization's meetings and maintaining correspondence between this organization and all other parties.

Article VI- Elections
Section 1 - Elections for Officers should be held before the last official day of classes every academic year.
Section 2 - The candidate receiving a plurality of votes will be deemed the winner.
Section 3 - All candidates must be members of this organization as explained in Article III.
Section 4 -  For an election to be held, a majority of the official members must be present for voting. The Secretary will determine this number in accordance with the latest list of official dues-paying members, or by determining a majority of the average attendance at meetings.

Article VII - Eligibility for Voting
All official members of the organization are allowed to vote. Official statute requires that a person meet the membership obligations of this organization.

Article VIII - Meetings
The Penn Sikh Organization  will meet at least once a month and the Officers will meet at least once a month. The President will have the authority to order an emergency meeting as she/he deems necessary.

Article IX - Amendments
At least two-thirds of the official membership, to be determined as explained in Article III, is required in order to vote on changes to this Constitution. All amendments after being successfully voted on by the organization must then be forwarded for approval to the Chair of the Student Activities Council.
