Excuses

Character: Edward Bloom (Big Fish) and an OFC who I didn't actually name...

Slash or het: Neither.

Rating: G

Edward Bloom was a 17 year old resident of Ashton. He went to high school. He was an intelligent student as it happened, and he could play a few sports but the most outstanding thing about Edward Bloom was the amount of effort he put into everything he did. Even this might not seem that outstanding at all. Which is a shame because despite such ordinary roots Edward Bloom lived a rather extraordinary life.

This particular day Edward was staying after school to do a science project. He had decided that he would make an invention so incredible it would revolutionise something. The thing was he hadnt quite decided what it was going to revolutionise yet. Or how it was going to revolutionise anything. Hed borrowed a few books from the school library and had just set about researching whatever it was that he would have to research to make his invention. Truth be told, it was all making him rather confused but he was determined to do it anyway.

He had been in the classroom for near to an hour after the class finished. All the other students had gone home and his teacher, Mr. Everson, had gone to make a pot of coffee. This left him free to become totally immersed in his research, which he hoped would help him get his thoughts together. Still, he couldnt deny that an interruption would be a relief.

Um, excuse me? A voice asked.

Ed glanced around. He had to double-take before finally believing his eyes. Hed seen some strange things in his life but he was surprised none the less. Leaning on the window sill, chin resting on her folded arms, there was a girl covered with butterflies. As Edward moved closer he realised that there werent just butterflies but spiders as well, moving over her skin, flowing, crawling, and fluttering in one mass. Only her head, feet and hands seemed to be visible. You couldnt even tell if she was wearing any clothes underneath! What was more, neither party (girl or insect) seemed to be bothered by the arrangement.

Could I help you maam? Edward asked politely.

He watched a spider leave the mass and crawl hesitantly across the window ledge and up his arm.

The girl smiled. I was just wondering where I am. She explained. Ive been walking for days you see.

Oh, youre in Ashton!

The girl paused for a moment and looked thoughtfully at a point behind Edwards head. I cant say Ive heard of it. She said eventually.

Well, thats where you are. Edward confirmed. Would you like to come in and rest your feet for a while. Im sure they must be sore after walking all that way.

Youre very kind.

The girl hoisted herself up through the window and into the classroom before Edward could suggest she used the entrance door. Her following of insects moved with her and she almost landed lightly on the floor. If it hadnt been for the book someone had carelessly left there. Instead she slipped, fell backwards, grabbed hold of a shelf and pulled the already unstable thing down with her. Hundreds of frightened butterflies exploded from her back before they were crushed.

Edward hadnt been able to catch her but he immediately went to help her up. She lay there dazed for a moment, surrounded by piles of old books and a very broken globe. She eventually took Edwards outstretched hand but then she pulled her hand back again abruptly and looked startled. Ed looked confused and gazed around. There was no one else in sight, although he could hear Mr. Everson walking back towards the classroom. When he looked around again the girl was gone. There was only a solitary butterfly fluttering out the window, obviously trying to catch up with the others. Edward was left alone, crouching among a pile of books, dust and shards of what had formerly been a globe of the world. The door opened.

It wasnt my fault! I can explain! Ed started.

Mr. Everson sighed exasperatedly, tried to ignore the mess, and settled down for another wild excuse.
