How Does Tuff Stuff Work?

Tuff Stuff is made up of a biocompatible polymer,
which alters its form upon receiving an electromagnetic
pulse. At the center of the weight bearing section of
the meniscus, a pressure sensor is inserted. A tiny
microchip is attached to the sensor and processes
the information it receives. If the pressure exerted
on the knee is greater than what can normally be
withstood by the knee, the microchip sends out a
signal to the pulse creating device, causing the knee
to become more shock resistant. This new shock
resistance prevents further injury to the knee.

The Surgery:
a. arthroscope inserted .... b. insertion of Tuff Stuff .... c. top view of knee

While sedated, a small incision is made in the knee.
The arthroscope is inserted as seen in figure a. The
damaged meniscus is then removed and an empty
space is left as seen in figure c. The Tuff Stuff is
then inserted into the space as seen in figure b, and
the incision is sutured shut.

Check-Ups:
Maintenance is minimal with Tuff Stuff.
Periodically, the patient should come into the office
and have the doctor recalibrate the device. This is a
non-invasive procedure. To do this, a remote control
that uses radio waves changes the device settings.
