Ode to Sweet
September

Re Dorothea Mackellar - she is one of Australia's best loved poets, and her poem "My Country" is unofficially our national poem. Unfortunately, there is no website with her works at the moment.

Spring, and the worlds astir,

And everything gives praise.

Spring on the Plains by Dorothea Mackellar.

Sweet September come! We need your touch

across our winter-devastated land.

Old winters fist still has us in its clutch,

and withered leaves show where that cruel hand

has spread its burning frost; our trees seem dead.

The ferns are curled and brown, the grass is dry.

One tiny snowdrop sadly shakes its head

as frozen day by frozen day goes by.

A small brown bird sings love songs to his mate,

hes full of restless energy, and flicks

from branch to branch; but who would contemplate

to nest on unreceptive leafless sticks?

September! Oh for Dorotheas spring

with welcome rain and lovely longer days;

the spicy scents that first warm breeze can bring,

when all the worlds astir, and everything gives praise.

Ode To Sweet
September

Sweet September, bring your cool caress

to ease our throbbing blister-scars of hell.

The crackled heat that summer poured across

the land has left a brown and crusted shell

on fields once plush and green; it sucked the pearls

of moisture from submissive mountain creeks.

We briefly toe-danced on the bronzing sands,

but now, September, it is you we seek.

You sprinkle golden-pebbled hues, and strum

your melody from harvest's ample throne.

Your crisply textured hands extend the nights

to layer us in soothing comfort zones.

Ah, sweet September! You don't even know

how deeply you massage our grateful minds.

You simply come and go, as duty calls,

and leave your dappled legacy behind.
