LADY SLIPPERS
 Paul ([email protected])
In the mountains and along the path
grow the lady-slippers, a species of paph.
A tall stem like the neck of a giraffe.
Can orchids be silly? They make me laugh.
I see the pink ones when Im hiking.
The first one that I saw, I took an instant liking.
Perched high upon Wawayanda Plateau.
Along the Appalachian Trail, putting on a show.
I saw one upon Bearfort Ridge last year.
Terrace Pond North needed a lot of work to clear.
I went back to check, on a day full of sunshine.
Instead of one Pink Ladys Slipper, I found nine!
On the lower mountains of western New Hampshire
I saw hundreds of Ladys slippers last year.
The New Hampshire Ladys Slippers are a paler pink.
Both are spectacularly beautiful, I think.
Up Mount Chocorua my sister did climb
And saw a white Ladys Slipper in the springtime.
Id love to see the ones in yellow and white.
Ladys Slippers are a hikers delight.
