If you had a magic wand you could wave and be granted any wish, what would be that wish? Would it be for world peace, no more poverty, starvation or hunger? Maybe that we all could unite in an effort to make life better for our children? I don't know about you folks, but I already know what mine would be.
I would wave my wand and wish that there be no more than one hundred thousand births per year worldwide for at the next twenty years. Can you even begin to conceive what that would accomplish?
In the blink of an eye, the abandonment of newborns on the streets of Mexico City, Bombay, Bankok, Calcutta and the like would cease. In many parts of the world, for the first time in centuries, children's lives would cease to have less value than that of a chicken or a goat and become something precious.
Little girls would no longer have to be sold into prostitution because parents could no longer afford to feed them. Little boys would no longer be forced to squat beside the roads, begging for pennies or scraps of food to keep themselves alive. Without the daily influx of tens of thousands of unwanted pregnancies, the birth of a child would again become what it should be..............a blessed miracle from God.
As it gradually became known that births without limit had ended, the value of every human life would grow and become more precious. National leaders world would hesitate to rush into a war that might decimate their own civilazations. The crime of murdering another human being would become, instead of so commonplace as to be almost boring to read about, something so heinous.........so tragic that it would involve a swift trial and an even more swift erasure of anyone commiting this unspeakable crime.
A city like Mexico City with it's twenty million and growing population would gradually dwindle back to the four million who were there just fifty years ago. ANYTHING that might cause harm to the few children being born would be targeted with research and the efforts of every nation. AIDS, infectious diseases like TB, smallpox, chicken pox, diptheria and the like would become the world's # 1 priority. Malnutrition of our children would be considered a crime against nature if allowed to continue.
Child abuse....................? I think we can all imagine the fate of a child abuser in such a world. In the blink of an eye, from unwanted mouths to feed to the world's most valued treasures.........our future as a race..........the human race.
Are there those who would protest violently against wishing for such a thing? Of course there are. I wonder how such people can sleep at night.
