GEORGIE

 Sharon ([email protected]))

Sarah ran out to the fenced yard. She saw the little turkey chicks and was fascinated as only a six year old could be. They were funny looking little creatures. One was more funny looking than the others. She adored him. She named him Georgie.

Every day Sarah would go out to the farm yard and feed little Georgie from her hand. Then she would go to the bus stop and catch her bus to school. When she got home she first ran to see Georgie. It was an unusual friendship, but a friendship it surely was.

The little turkeys soon grew to be adult turkeys. Still the friendship between Sarah and Georgie remained. The turkey's were scheduled to be shipped to a slaughter house where they would soon become packaged meat for sale to the public as Thanksgiving dinner. But Sarah begged and pleaded with her parents to let Georgie stay.

It was difficult to refuse such an angelic little voice pleading, even though the farm needed every dollar it could get. Sarah won. Georgie stayed.

Sarah and Georgie remained friends for years. But as time went by, Sarah's interests strayed to other things. She was becoming a teenager. Georgie grew old. Too old to be sold for Thanksgiving dinner. Too old to be cooked for Thanksgiving dinner. Sarah grew too old to play with turkeys. Boys were more fun now.

Finally the time came when Georgie passed away from old age. Sarah Said her good-byes to him as he was buried under a shade tree.

One day, when Sarah was eighteen years old, She brought a boy home. The boy asked her father for Sarah's hand in marriage. Sarah's face still held an angelic look. Her father could not refuse the angelic look. It was agreed that the kids would soon be married.

A child was born to them the next year. A sweet little angelic looking girl baby. They named her Sue Ellen. Sue Ellen grew into a lovely child, an image of her mother. When she was six years old, she came to visit Grandma and Grandpa. She was fascinated by the turkey chicks as only a six year old could be.

Sue Ellen made friends with a little Turkey. She named him Georgie.
