![]() It is beyond all logic to me when people accept the most obvious abuses of the judicial system with "Well, everyone is entitled to the best defense." First, lawyers are NOT required to defend someone they know is guilty. Most of them do it out of ego and bragging rights about whom they got off for what serious crime. They do it because if their client goes free for a crime that the majority think he was obviously guilty of, they make BIG money and are in big demand by other cash-rich guilty parties. This is not how our system was set up to work. Our laws state that people are entitled to a lawyer, they do not say that lawyer should lie, attack the character of innocent people, and pull any deceitful stunts to sway popular opinion. That is not justice nor fairness, that is a perversion of justice. Our laws were set up to ensure fairness, to protect the innocent and to punish the guilty. I wonder how the man who defended the child abuse charges against Alejandro Avila two years ago feels now that Avila has murdered Samantha Runnion? Even though that lawyer knew that Avila had volunteered to take a lie detector test and failed it miserably he still took the case and chose his tactics. ANY lawyer's first obligation is to the spirit of the law in our judicial system, not to an individual client. His defense of Avila was an unrelenting attack on the testimony of the two nine year old girls who were the accusers of Avila. By doing so, he created doubt in the minds of the jury. Can anyone with the IQ of a baboon say that justice was in anyway served by that? I will tell you what I fear. I fear that in today's world where 75% of college seniors state that their professors teach that there is NO right or wrong, that lawyer could look anyone in the eye and say he "did his job" and worse yet, his answer will be accepted. What has happened to us? Where are our brains? There must be many people in this country still able to think as opposed to those who ignorantly mouth platitudes about criminal rights that they read in the media. The battered, tortured, sexually abused and DEAD body of a once beautiful five year old child is our inheritance for allowing such blatant nonsense to bring us to the point we are now. Do you have any idea how many times this has happened? Are you outraged? If not, WHY? There are other inheritances from our acceptance of such brutal behavior. What do you think that lawyer's defense of Avila did to those two nine year old girls? What will they grow up believing in? What will they and thousands like them teach THEIR children? Think about it long and hard, because your children and grandchildren will live in the world those thousands inhabit. God help America. And if America is still considered a shining example of justice anywhere in this world, God help the world. There is one thing, one hope. We, as a people, have a say in our government. We as a people allowed it to become like this and WE, as a people can CHANGE this path.
