A DELIGHTFUL SUMMER DAY
 Frannie ([email protected])
There is nothing delightful about this summer day.
A strong breeze blows, but it is Hot and Damp,
making the air unbreathable and oppressive.
Sweat-soaked laborers pave our roads,
Or deliver mail,
Or work in bakeries in front of hot ovens,
Or re-shingle rooftops.
God help them.
Old men are snoozing in the park, under trees.
Children are splashing in the pool.
I am sitting in my air-cooled home,
moving only my fingers over the keyboard.
It's too hot to move anything else.
Dark clouds are gathering and we pray for a storm
a big storm with crashing thunder and heavy rain.
If God answers prayers, we will be blessed
tomorrow with a delightful summer day.
Until then, the birdies and squirrels are out of sight.
Wherever they are hiding, I hope they are cool.
