| Nelson Applegate's NASCAR career was limited to the races held on tracks in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. He made his debut at Heidelberg Raceway in Pittsburgh where he finished a respectable 12th out of 42 cars. He ran two other races in 1951, one at his home track in Morristown, NJ and the other at Langhorne Speedway. Applegate had another strong showing at Langhorne where he finished 13th in his Hudson Hornet. His luck at the track would change the following year. Nelson returned to the NASCAR circuit in 1952 at Morristown where he qualified 14th and came home in 7th. A few months later, Applegate suffered a devastating crash at Langhorne. He suffered multiple life-threatening injuries, including a fractured skull, winning $35 for his trouble. Applegate recovered from the injuries and returned to racing in New Jersey, but never again competed in NASCAR. | |||
