Hooters Procup Series
Naturally Fresh 250
May 28, 2005 ~ Jennerstown Speedway
#04 Larry Barrett heads down pit road during practice.  The Ringgold, VA driver started the race 30th but finished 21st.
#13 Toby Porter made the trip from Greenville, SC to compete at Jennerstown with hopes to gain experience for when the championship series kicks off at the track in September.  Unfortunately, rain ultimately cancelled qualifying which meant the field was set by points.  Being that Porter did not have any points in the North division, he and the rest of the South competitors had to go home.
#51 Joey Lagano made his HPC debut at Jennerstown.  The 15 year-old turned heads with his agressive driving style, which would pay off a couple of weeks later when he won in just his second career start.  Lagano would suffer damage in a crash at Jennerstown, however, forcing him to a 27th place finish.  #91 Scott Drake started the race in 34th and finished 27th after suffering mechanical failure.
My childhood hero Glenn Gault returned to Jennerstown as a darkhorse.  Unfortunately Gault never had a shot to win as he developed an oil leak early and lost a lap on pit road.  Glenn fought back and ran well, but never could get his lap back.  He finished 14th after starting 16th.
#36 Jimmy Spencer, Jr. had several problems during the Naturally Fresh 250.  He spun out twice before finally being finished off in a grinding crash with Joey Lagano late in the race.  #12 Robbie Marhefka from Winber, PA had a decent run, finishing 17th one lap down.
Todd Peck of Glenville, PA had a tough day at Jennerstown.  Peck helped to bring out one of the ten caution flags of the evening.  He struggled home to a 22nd place finish.
Joe Gaita of Yorktown, VA had a decent run in the #42 car.  Gaita started and finished 11th.  He was one of just 13 cars to finish on the lead lap.
Michelle Theriault (gray uniform) stands by her #86 Chevrolet.  Michelle set a good qualifying lap which would have landed her the eighth starting position.  Unfortunately, qualifying was rained out with just four cars left to make a run, relegating her to the 29th starting spot.  She would start the car, but Michael Ritch, pictured here in #28, would get in the car after the green flag dropped.  Ritch is another South driver who just wanted to log some lap times around Jennerstown.  Ritch powered the car to a fourth place finish.  Being that Michelle started the car, she got all the points.
Michelle Theriault leads Shelby Howard down pit lane during practice.  Howard was driving a car owned by NASCAR Champion Tony Stewart. Howard started 24th and struggled home in 20th, three laps down.
Heading down the back straight at Jennerstown are #13 Toby Porter, #55 Woody Howard, #18 Jeremy Miller, #14 Vince Fanello, #10 Logan Dernoshek, and #44 Joel Kauffman.
The field heads into Turn 1 for a warm-up  prior to qualifying.
The field heads out of Turn 4 during a warm-up  prior to qualifying.
#28 Michael Ritch, #42 Joe Gaita, #97 Danny Sammons, and #73 Jeff Agnew wait to make a qualifying run.  Sammons and Agnew would go on to have great runs in the race, finishing 5th and 6th respectively.
#20 Shelby Howard, #17 D.J. Kennington, #48 Sam Fullone, #8 Johnny Rumley, #7 Mike Laughlin, Jr., and #40 Todd Peck line up for qualifying on pit road.  Kennington, who comes from Canada, ran up front all night in his Pontiac.  He started 12th but finished 3rd.  Fullone stayed on the lead lap most of the evening but crashed late, relegating him to a 25th place finish.  Rumley ran well and lead late in the event, but a cut tire forced him to pit in the closing stages.  He finished 18th.  Laughlin was unfortunately one of the South division drivers who had to go home because qualifying was rained out.
#86 Michelle Theriault, #73 Jeff Agnew, #16 Mardy Lindley, and #04 Larry Barrett prepare to make a qualifying run.  Lindley lead 25 laps before slipping to a 10th place finishing position.
Tim Bainey, Jr. got loose coming off Turn 4 on his qualifying lap and spun into the inside wall.  Bainey's crew repaired the Greased Lightning Ford, allowing the Osceola Mills, PA driver finish an impressive seventh. The rain started again with just four cars left to make a qualifying run.
Joel Kauffman (middle) talks strategy with a crew member as they uncover his car once the rain subsided.  Joel ran very well, leading 16 laps, but a mechanical failure put him out of the race.  The 19 year-old was credited with 29th.
These two shots show the only benefits the rain presented.  The Naturally Fresh 250 was not started until after 9 pm.  The fans were angered when USAR decided to run the first 70 laps under caution to help prepare the track for green flag racing.  However, there was some very good racing in the contest which was finally won by Benny Gordon.
