The Mauricewood Pit Disaster
The Mauricewood Pit Disaster  was one of many mining tragedies in Scotland .Sixty three miners died after a fire at the pit in Penicuik in 1889 when the wooden lining of the ventilation shaft caught fire ,the extreme heat and thick smoke generated in the fire made escape impossible  for the trapped miners .To this day the cause of the fire is still not known,and on this site a plaque has been errected in memory of the miners who lost their lives.
