Macaroni Penguin


Scientific Name: Eudpytes chrysolophus
Size
Macaroni penguins are 26 to 30 inches (66 to 76cm) tall. They are 10 pounds (4�5kg).
Where are they found?
They are found on Sub-antarctic islands in the Atlantic and Indian oceans; South Georgia, Kerguelen, Heard, South Shetland, South Orkney, Falklands, South Sandwich, Bouvet, Prince Edward and Crozet Islands.

What do they eat?
They feed on squid and shrimps.
Main predators
Their main predators are Skuas, Sheathbills and Leopard Seals.
Highlights
They are larger than Rockhoppers, which they closely resemble. Its plumes are orange rather than yellow, extending backward rather than outwards.

Macaronis have a strong goatish smell. They are bolder and tougher than their frequent neighbour, the Gentoo.

The rookeries are established on coastal promontories or islets, sometimes consisting of many thousands of birds, sometimes only a few. They may lay three eggs (chalky-white or very pale bluish-green), from which only one chick is likely to be reared.The nests are made of small stones, mud and tussock grass.
