During 1990 I embarked upon a group of 50 x 40" pictures based on views, incidents, activities and objects surrounding a painting shed which I had constructed in a forest glade some small distance from my studio. It seemed an important place from the point of view of inspiration and subject matter. I had worked from this spot on and off for some considerable time and had set up a group of outdoor easels for working on a series of related pictures.
The work produced on this 50 x 40" scale soon fell into a landscape led symbolic theme which subconciously ran parallel with memories I had of Arthur Rimbaud's poetry, for which I had always maintained an empathy. A link was forged and the works seemed to all into sets of five panels, each representing five elements sacred to the research of the ancient alchemists whom Rimbaud had studied and used in the construction of much of his later poetry. The images are amalgams of set landscape pieces and remembered ideas mixed together to produce an approximation of what I had conceived - symbols and seen phenomena thrown together into the melting pot of imagination.
