Allie is going to the egg donor place because they pay $3,000 an egg, and Allie wants a computer. I accompany her to see if this is something I could do, too.

She fills out a long form about her short life and they reject her.

"Why?" Allie says, angrily and accusingly but mostly self-loathingly.

The nurse looks at Allie. "Miss," she says, "You have checked off alcoholism, mental illness, drug addiction, and felony in your family history."

Allie says, "Oh, don't worry about that -- it's all the same person. My dad is messy, but he's the only one."

We leave. "I should have lied," she says.

We eat empty omelets at Century City and Allie searches for a rich illegal immigrant to marry. "One who will pay me a lot," she says.
