What's the neatest thing you've ever seen? My grandmother crossed the Atlanic in a steamship by herself when she was only 16, lived long enough to see her husband and both her children buried, and saw me through what I thought were unbearable loss and crises, all without a single tear or falter. After she had a stroke in 1987, she was unable to use much of the left side of her body, she couldn't recognize people, she could not speak, and needed 24/7 nursing care. I visited her often to bring her fresh flowers, brush her hair, change her pierced earrings (she got her ears pierced when she was 70, she was so proud!), and just to talk to her. During one of my vists, I was sitting beside her, rambling on about how my day had gone and stroking her arm absently as I talked. I looked up as I was talking to see her weeping silently. She did not look sad or upset. I think she enjoyed my company without understanding who I was, and being unable to speak or move very well, that was the only way she was able to show appreciation for what must have seemed to her to be the company and attention of an anonymous woman. That was the neatest thing I've ever seen. |
|
What was the last movie you watched? BBC production of "Mansfield Park," with Sylvestra Le Touzel and Nicholas Farrell. It seemed to be shot entirely on video tape, but otherwise was good. |

Where are you going? I'd like to return to Paris since they were nice enough to build a Disneyland there to lure me back. Or perhaps safari in Africa, or go to New Zealand - New Zealand is beautiful. |
