As far as progress goes for women in sports, some has been made. More and more women are taking thier place in the coaching staff's and offices of professional and non-professional athletic teams. Budgets are being expanded to try to compensate for the inequities that are known to exist. These are all important steps to improving the opportunities in sports for women, but they still have a long way to go(Hertz). The media contrubutes largley to creating the gender gaps in athletics. The main areas that get the coverage are mostly male related. Even reporters have admitted that they cover more male sports because that's what sells(Navarro). Having equal opportunites for men and women should not be inerpreted along the lines of a profit. Some are concerned that giving more media attention and money will take away from male athletics(Goff). We forget that women do not even have the chances or funds that men do. Is it too much to ask to share some of these resources and increase the spot light on women? |
