Chloe looked around the room. It was dressed quaintly with white Christmas lights and artificial stars. However simple the room was decorated, there was something magic filling the air, she could feel it. Something was going to happen tonight. Tonight was her night, it had to be. Chloe looked up towards the glass ceiling. The stars glimmered magnificently and shone through the faint clouds. The few raindrops that were left on the crystal clear glass, sparkled like small diamonds. “This has to be a good night, it just has to be,” Chloe thought to herself, “After all that’s happened, this must be the night when everything has to go right.” It was exactly four weeks after the little predicament that she had with Xavier. It was exactly four weeks since she hoped for something to happen between them. She knew that nothing could ever happen between them. Friends right? Just friends. But she wondered why just being friends hurt so much. Why did it leave such a dull pain in her heart? Why couldn’t she just move on? It was just a crush, but it meant so much more to her, much more than she expected. Now that it was gone, she felt an emptiness, a longing, but she knew she couldn’t cross that path again. It would only lead to more pain and disappointment. She looked at her lap and smoothed a little crease in her burgundy dress. Not tonight though, she would forget about that tonight. Everything was perfect and she wasn’t going to think about it. She was going to have fun tonight, she promised herself. She checked her nails…perfect. The first time she had gotten them this perfect. “Haha, I know what you mean,” Izzy’s sharp giggle cut through Chloe’s thoughts. She smiled. It was a good thing Izzy was enjoying herself. It was nice that she finally got over Alex and moved on. Another giggle came from Izzy. A girl from the other table came over. “Hey Izzy, do you know who I just saw?” “Who?” “Come on, I’ll show you.” Izzy glanced around the table, “Um…I’ll be right back. Hey Chloe, you want to come?” Chloe shook her head, “No, it’s ok. Just fill me in later.” “k.” Izzy said as she rose and walked away from the table whispering to the other girl. Whatever it was, it made Izzy pick up her pace. “I wonder what was that about.” Greg whispered to Chloe. Greg was Izzy’s ‘date,’ figuratively speaking of coarse. He was sweet enough to take her to the prom after Alex left her high and dry. That was just his personality, sweet and caring, too bad he already had a girlfriend; she was in college. “I don’t know…but when I find out, I’ll tell you.” Chloe giggled. Greg looked at her intently, as if he was examining her. “What?” “No, nothing,” he said as he blinked out of his stare. “I was just looking at you. You’re so beautiful.” Chloe blushed slightly, “aww…thank you.” “No I mean it. You look so different. I barely recognized you when you came in.” “Uh…what so u mean I don’t look pretty everyday?” Chloe said with a smirk. “No, no, no, you do look pretty everyday. But tonight, there’s something different, I don’t know…You look very pretty, that’s all I’m saying.” “Ok…I’ll give you a moment to take your foot out of your mouth.” “Haha, so, hey, who you trying to impress?” “Impress? Why honey, I’m trying to impress everybody.” “Well, it’s working.” Greg said as he started to laugh. Chloe knew Greg just as long as she knew Izzy. They were buddies and she knew that, but she liked it that way. Their whole relationship from the beginning was totally platonic. He was always just this guy who was just there. Too bad she didn’t hang out with him as much as she did in grammar school. Someone clinked a glass. Chloe’s thoughts shifted and she started to think of Xavier. Could she just be buddies with Xavier? She closed her eyes. She had no choice. But not tonight. She couldn’t think of that tonight. She slowly opened her eyes, it was her night. It was the perfect night…
