Martin Honaker 1760-1846 THE BEGINNING OF THE FAMILY TREE! Most of the family were CHRISTIANS, so it's only appropriate to add the best one here.

Martin {1} Honaker, Sr. was born between 1760 and 1770 in Frederick Co., and died in 1846 in Russell Co.; VA The town of Honaker in Russell County was named for one of Martin's descendants. Several articles about the town are among this book's appendices.

It is believed that Martin was stationed at a frontier post in Russell Co., Va., to guard against Indian attacks. While there, he met Jonathan Musick whose family resided near the fort. Martin later married Jonathan's oldest daughter, Lydia, and Martin's brother, Peter, married a younger daughter, Mary.

Martin first paid taxes in Russell Co., Va., in 1793. On 22. Aug.1797, he bought 45 acres of land in Russell County on Lewis Creek for $45. One year later, he bought property from his brother, Peter, who then went to Kentucky. On one Oct.1805 Martin sold 45 acres to Patrick Kendrick for $250.

On 24 Oct 1807, Martin was granted permission to build grist on his Lewis Creek property. Later, he and his sons built two additional gristmills on Lewis Creek. Martin, his sons, and grandsons operated gristmills powered by water wheels in various locations on Lewis Creek and the Clinch River for at least 100 years.

Log homes were also built on the property by three of Martin's sons; Nicholas, Jonathan, and Isaac. In the 1815 Southwest Virginia Tax Assessment, Martin Honaker is listed as follows: "2 farms on Lewis Creek. One farm 247 acres with two dwelling houses of wood (1 2-story 24 ft. By 18 ft; the other 1 story 16 ft. Square); 1 barn of wood; 2 stables; 1 corn house; 1 loom house; 1 spring house; 1 mill house; all valued at $1,235. One other farm: 52 acres valued at $109.

On 8 Sep 1846, the following was entered in the Law Order Book of Russell County:

Lydia Honaker, widow of Martin Honaker deceased having signified to the court her refusal to administer on the estate of the said deceased. On the motion of John F. McElhenney who made oath, and together with Charles S. Creigh, Isaac Vermillion and William B. Aston his securities entered into and acknowledged a bond in the penalty of $5,000.00 conditioned as the law directs, certificate is granted him for obtaining letters administration of said descendant’s estate in due form.

This is the earliest known recorded date of Martin's death. He would have been around 76 years old when he died.

Martin left no will, but in a deed dated 24 Oct. 1848, his heirs sold their property to Martin, Jr. At the time of his death, Martin, Sr. owned four slaves. From the partial settlement of his estate, it can be determined that one of the slaves was named "Betty"! No other names are mentioned.

Martin inherited from his father a large steel safe and German style grandfather clock. Nadine Larson describes in Appendix J of this book, and in Hans Jacob Honaker-From Switzerland to America, them. They went to Martin's son Nicholas, who died at the age of 42, and subsequently were sold to Thomas W. Davis, along with Nicholas' land and home.

As of 1997, the whereabouts of the clock is unknown. The safe is still owned by Davis family descendants and is stored in a Florida warehouse, where it was seen and photographed in 1995 by Martin descendant Helen Yost. It is our hope that the safe can be returned to Honaker, Va., for placement in a town museum.

Martin's wife, Nancy Lydia Musick (called Lydia), was the daughter of Jonathan Musick and Helen Colley. Martin and Lydia were married circa 1795 in Russell Co.; VA She was born in 1778 in Pittsylvania Co., Va., and died in 1852 in Russell Co., Va. Martin and Lydia's children:

3. Isaac {2} Honaker (called Shop) (Martin, Sr.{1}). Born in 1801 in Russell Co., Va. Died 6 May 1890 in Russell Co., Va. Buried in the Whitt Family Cemetery near Honaker, Russell Co., VA He was a gunsmith and Carpenter. It is said that Isaac built several houses in the "Old Honaker" area of Russell Co.; VA Among them was the old Aston House. He also operated a mill at Gardner on the Clinch River and another near Black ford, Russell Co., VA a great granddaughter, Clarissa Stump, remembered Isaac Honaker as a large jovial man, riding a white horse. He married Sarah Whitt (called Sallie), daughter of James Whitt and Mary Unknown in 1824. Born in 1808 in Russell Co., Va. Died 20 Dec 1879 in Russell Co., Va. 15. Martin and his brothers, James and John (descendants #16 and 17), are thought to be the three Honaker’s of the same name who enlisted 13 Hull 1861 as privates in Co,G, 37th Virginia Infantry, C.S.A., at New Garden, Va. Martin was listed as deserted on a 1 May 1862 company muster roll.

He married Catherine Elizabeth Hess (called Betty). Born in 1826 in Virginia. They lived on Clinch River near the mouth of Lewis Creek. The 1850 census merely lists them as living in Russell Co., VA the 1870 census further defines the area of where they lived as being in the New Garden Township, Russell Co., VA Although Martin died in 1898, Elizabeth is listed in the 1900 census as living with her son, Lilburn, in New garden District, Russell Co., Va. James amid his brothers, Martin and john (descendants #15 and 17), are thought to be the three Honaker’s of the same name who enlisted 13 Jul 1861 as privates in Co.G, 37th Virginia Infantry, listed as deserted as of 11 Oct 1862 on a company muster roll; but was accounted for when he was issued clothing 3 Feb 1863. It is believed by some researchers that James was killed in the Civil War. At this time, his military records do not verify this belief.

Died 25 Feb 1944. He married Maggie Hess, James Hess married daughter of John Henry Hess and Catherine Miller, 29 Mar 1882 in Russell Co., VA They. Although the 1900 census gives Maggie's birth dates as Mar 1866, researchers submitted 24 Jan 1865 as the date. All agree that she was born in Virginia. Buried in Green hill's Memory Gardens, Claypool Hill, Va. He married Bessie Ellen Bales (called Bea), daughter of Henry Kelly Bales and Rebecca Alice Dye, in Raven, Russell Co., Va. Born 13 May 1896 in Raven, Va. Died 10 May 1971 in Honaker, Va. Buried in Green hill's Memory Gardens, Claypool Hill, VL Monroe worked for the Norfolk & Western Railroad for 49 years and seven months. During their early years, he and Bessie lived in different places because of his work. They settled in Honaker, Va., in the 1930's. Monroe retired in 1961 as an engineer. He and Bessie enjoyed retirement, on one occasion traveling by train from Honaker, Va., to California, wit a stopover in Texas to visit their youngest son, Don, who was then attending Bible college in preparation for the ministry. Flooring their time in California, Monroe and Bessie made a trip into Mexico with their daughter, Imo Jean, who ten lived in San Bernardino, Calif. In 1966, Monroe developed a heart condition, which eventually caused his death. He and Bessie were married for over 50 years, and a number of stories about tern, written by their son, Rev. Don Honaker, have appeared in The Honaker Family Newsletter. A photograph of tern, and a picture and story about their son Eflier, appeared in The Honaker Family Newsletter, spring, 1997. Their daughter, Imo Jean, wrote the story. All male members of the household served their country during wartime - James Monroe in the Army during World War I; Elesta Bernard, Emmett, and Kenneth Eflier in the Army durina World War U; Buford Irlon during te Korean War, where he served aboard a destroyer; and Elmer Donald during the Korean War at K-55 Air Base, South Korea. During WWII, Elesta Bernard was wounded and Kenneth Eflier was killed during the crossing of the Rhine River in Germany. Children: 550 i. Elesta Bernard[6) (called Bernard). ii. Emmett. An accomplished writer, her stories took honors in the Honaker [Va.] Redbud Essay Contests and appeared in The Honaker Family Newsletter. A story about Rose's 92nd birthday celebration appeared in the Lebanon [VA] News, 14 Jan 1998, and in The Honaker Family Newsletter, spring, 1998. Mary Ruth Honaker Gillespie, 75, died Nov.11, 1994 in a hospital in Tazewell, Tazewell Co., VL Born Aug. 5, 1919 in Russell Co., Va., the daughter of Morgan T. and Ruby Agnes Boyd Honaker, she lived in Cedar Bluff, Va., and was a member of the Richlands, Va., branch of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Her husband, Clarence, preceded her in death. Survivors include four sons, Clarence McArthur "Buster" and Victor William Gillespie, both of Cedar Bluff; Franklin Delano "Frank" Gillespie, of Swords Creek, Va.; and Richard Cleveland "Ricky" Gillespie, of Flora Vista, N.M.; three daughters, Mrs. Shelby Jean Fiddle and Mrs. Patricia Georgiana Depuy, both of Cedar Bluff; and MIL Peggy Ann Pelton, of Casper, Wyo.; 11 grandchildren; four great grandchildren; three brothers, Roland Lawrence of New York; Madison O' Coy "Bob", of Roanoke, Va.; and Bill Edward Honaker, of Lebanon, VA; and two sisters, Mrs. Mildred Stewart and Mrs. Frances Rider, both of New York.
