Dominic Monaghan

Born Dec 8, 1976, in Berlin, Germany, Dominic moved to Manchester, England with his parents when he was 12. His father was a schoolteacher, and his mother, a nurse. Dominic is younger of two boys.

He studied English Lit, Drama, and Geography at Sixth Form College, and was then offered the role of Geoffrey in the British television series Hetty Wainthropp Investigates. Before LOTR, this was the role he was best known for. Other television appearances include roles in Monsignor Renard, Hostile Waters, and This is Personal: The Hunt for the Yorkshire Ripper. His stage performances include The Resurrectionists

Dominic Monaghan speaks fluent German, and is very good with impersonations and accents. He enjoys soccer, writing, music, fashion, and surfing (recommended to him by Orlando Bloom while on location for LOTR!). He also loves the Manchester United Football Team.

Currently, he is scripting a film with LOTR co-star Billy Boyd. He recently filmed a 30-minute short film called An Insomnia's Nightmare, which may be shown at the upcoming Sundance Film Festival.

THE LORD OF THE RINGS:

Monaghan had read the trilogy as a child; the books were his father’s favorites. He had a formal audition for LOTR, then left to film the Monsignor Renard miniseries in France. Six months into it, his agent warned him he could have to leave suddenly to meet with Peter Jackson. He didn't have to in the end; he was called back within a few days and offered the part of Merry.

Says Dominic: "This project has been for me and for my dear friends a supernatural experience. We have all grown so much in the last year and have been around for each other in some really stressful times. I feel so blessed to have met such an interesting bunch of people, and to have been able to tour New Zealand, mixing with the most friendly people I have ever met…"

Of the final filming scene with the 'Ents', he comments: "Sad to get down from the old guys shoulders for the last time, he's become a good friend. Billy and I would sit up there for hours above the crew drinking from bottles of water and eating cakes, singing songs, stretching our backs out as it's quite uncomfy."
