Billy Boyd

Billy Boyd was born in Glasgow, Scotland on August 28, 1968, to Mary and William Boyd. When his parents died, he and his sister, Margaret, were raised by their grandmother. His acting career began on a Scottish TV series called ‘Taggart’. Other tv appearances included roles in ‘Soldier’s Leap’, ‘Coming Soon’, ‘Julie and the Cadillacs’, and ‘Chapter and Verse’. ‘An Urban Ghost Story’ marked Billy’s feature film debut.

Billy has been in many UK stage productions, and he trained at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. There, he graduated with a degree in Dramatic Arts. He is extremely admired within the Scottish acting community, and they call him the ‘oly Scottish actor who is never resting.’ Of this, Billy says:

"It's a terrible thing to admit but there's only been once when I didn't know what my next job was when I finished a job. I've been really lucky because I'm doing things I want to do - and right across the spectrum too."

Billy is a very talented singer with a deep tenor/light baritone voice. He plays guitar/bass guitar, loves porridge for breakfast, and his hobbies include surfing, dancing, and music.

LORD OF THE RINGS

Of hobbits, Boyd comments:

"Hobbits are a lot like Scots. It's all about nature and enjoying their land, which is a very Scottish thing." (SFX Magazine)

To better prepare for the character of 'Pippin', Boyd re-read the books ..."This time I'm thinking more about the facts; where I've been, about Middle Earth, the families, the Shire and stuff, just trying to build up a character. I'm concentrating on this job at the moment, rather than worry about career moves later on. I might disappear... But I doubt it!" he laughs. (SFX magazine)

Of the cast: "We became incredibly close ... With this movie it's definitely different...Everyone is constantly in touch with everyone else. I saw Dom three weeks ago, I went to stay with him and Elijah in LA. I don't know if Peter Jackson is just an incredible judge of character and he knew we would get along, or if it was just luck, but I think from the day we got there, we knew it would be something special."

"Actually, it's impossible to speak about Pippin without mentioning Merry. His [Pippin's] whole life is about his friends, and especially about Merry. The two of them are as close as friends can be- closer than family- so close you can't even imagine one of them doing something without the other."
