Sailing in Finland

Sailboat racing is a hobby of mine. I was on a team during the summer of 1999. We did rather well although the 2nd and 3rd places were slightly short of my goal. During the summer of 2000 I had the pleasure of sailing with my Friend Mika who is half-owner of the sailboat in the pictures below.

Here I am with Mika after we moor the sailboat at his yacht club's island.

Tanja, Mika, and Katri. Note that none or us are watching where we are going.
We are flying the US flag as I was the honorary captain that day.

Now we are looking. Mika commented that he never expected to spend so much time staring at a chart, But the archipelago in Finland is not the place to just sail around without a care. The shoreline is littered boulders waiting for the unsuspecting bottom to rip holes into.

Boarding the boat to sail back to Helsinki.

Almost home. The sun is low in the horizon now.The afternoon was much windier than the morning. You can see that the boat is heeling to the side.

Arriving back in Helsinki. One last obstacle. A ferry from Tallinn coming up the channel.

The ferry passes by without a hitch after were made a round turn to let the ferry past.
