Welcome to chapter one of The Dead Street. This game is freeware.
You may distribute it as much as you want.

--INFORMATION ON VBRUN AND SCREEN RESOLUTION:

The game requires a special set of .dll files, called VBRun, to operate properly.
VBRun is distributed freely by Microsoft. You may already have these files; to find
out, simply run the game. An error message will appear if you do not have VBRun.
In that case, run the file "vbrun60sp5.exe" that is included with the game. This will
install the necessary files.

For more information on VBRun, go to Microsoft's Web site at www.microsoft.com.

This game is best viewed in 1024 X 768 resolution.

--HOW TO PLAY:

The gameplay in The Dead Street is meant to be intuitive. At the bottom of the
screen is a set of controls: "Look," "Touch / Use," and "Talk." If you click one of these,
the corresponding action will display in the adjacent box. Clicking on a character or
object on the screen will perform that action on that character or object. For example,
if you click on "Look" and then on a character, information about the character will appear.

By clicking the arrows at the bottom right and left of the screen, you will walk along
Dead Street. If you are in a room or a building, the arrows will be disabled, and
replaced by a button that will allow you to leave the room or building and
return to the street.

By clicking on "Pockets," you can look at what you are carrying. The controls in
the "Pockets" window work much the same way as the controls in the main window.
To examine an object you are carrying, click "Examine" and then the object. If you
"Pick up" an object, the name of the object will appear in the corresponding box,
as well as in the main screen, indicating that you are holding the object. Then,
click on the character or thing you want to use that object on. For example, if
you click on "Money," you will pick up some money. Then, if you want to try giving
the money to a character, you simply click on the character. Note that you can use
objects in your pockets on other objects in your pockets. For example, if you wanted
to use scissors you are carrying on a piece of paper you are carrying, click "Pick up,"
then "Scissors," then "Paper."

You can save your game at any time while viewing the main screen by clicking on "Menu," then
"Save Game." You cannot save your game while talking to a character. The default save game
directory is the directory where the game is located. When you save, end the filename of
the saved game with ".dst". For example, a valid filename would be: c:\windows\mygame.dst
Also, be careful not to select another file by accident when saving; if you do, the file will be
overwritten.

To exit the game, click on "Menu," then "Exit."
