2003 Plastic Classic The 2003 Plastic Classic was as crazy as previous years. I guess there is no way to improve on fun and relaxation. The TODSF contribution to the Regatta (our annual Perpetual Trophy Race) was won by Balero (with question ;-) followed by Viking and Dogstar.
The photo shows Dogstar leading Viking around the T Mark the first time however, Mike lead Larry around the second time (finish line) which is when it counts (sorry Mike, didn't get that shot.) I think there were about 8 boats racing this year with 2 anchored out (Juno and Pegasus) while their skippers supervised the installation and activation of Bay View Boat Club's (BVBC) new Margarita machine (it works just fine ;-)
I thought party time at the club house this year was a little light with only 3 of the racers returning for cheap food, drinks, laughs and camaraderie. I'll never understand why anyone participates in a regatta and then sails home without telling one lie (which I thought was the only reason for going to a Regatta...must not own an anchor or rafting lines. The friendly faces that did make it to fun time this year where treated by the return of an old friend; Roy, Dogstar's long time navigator and crew was a pleasant addition to the festivities. Roy retired to Minnesota a couple of years ago and his quiet but charming and gentlemanly demeanor has been missed by all. BVBC's tasty treat this year was BBQ chicken or steak
and the boogie could be found anywhere but on the dance floor.
From about noon to 5 PM, entertainment was provided by a band on the patio with evening music moving indoors to the tune of a new band (strange body movements were still not restrict to the dance floor.)

It took a six pack of beer and flowering praise to get us rowed back to our boats in a small leaky skiff by a friendly BVBC member . This year at last call (10 PM), in an effort retain our beer supply, we moved night caps to Head Over Heels where Rob (in the well) provided bar service. We were joined by Owen (sorry, no photo) Juno's long time crewman and TODSF friend who's late work schedule caused him to miss the party. After late night idle conversation we folded into our respective boats which were rafted in pairs and brought another year of craziness to a close.
Sunday breakfast, aboard with friends, was followed by light air and Tritons drifting off in different directions. Juno headed for Berkley to pick up Mark (Ananke) who was unable to attend the Classic this year because of personal commitments while Pegasus waited in East Bay for Juno's arrival. We then sailed together across San Pablo Bay to Vallejo where we enjoyed dinner and spent the evening telling more lies on Pegasus before heading our separate way's Monday morning (Juno to Napa Valley, Pegasus returned to the Delta) in light air.
Mark Steve Pegasus heading home If you missed the Classic this year you have the right to feel sad because it doesn't get any better than this. Fun racing with a 1st, 2nd, 3rd and a bunch of 4th places, friends and first time acquaintances enjoying the camaraderie unique to sailors on the water. You now have 12 months to prepare for next year... till then, cya on the water........Ray
