| Serape style poncho Make two pieces 43" by 26" and sew them together you should have a poncho to fit a medium sized man. Id imagine there are several ways to produce the fabric. I found a web site with a pattern for an afghan style serape in crochet. The link is: http://www.knitting-crochet.com/crochet/ser.html You obviously can use any colors and stripe pattern that pleases you. I would recommend using a stitch pattern that makes a firm fabric. A size H hook with worsted weight yarn is a good place to start. I started playing around with a knitted material which looks very nice, but to make a piece large enough to make a poncho would take a lot of time. Here it is anyway. This is the pattern for Linen Stitch: Multiple of 2 stitches. Row 1 (Right Side) *K1, slip 1 purlwise with yarn in front, bring yarn to back between needles; repeat from* , end K2. Row 2 *P1, slip 1 purlwise with yarn in back, bring yarn to front between needles, repeat from * , end P2. Repeat rows 1 and 2 If you change colors every two or four rows, you get a fairly firm material that does look as if it was woven. Again, play with it until you get a color scheme that suites you. I found if I used a one stitch garter stitch selvedge on the right hand edge only and tied the tag ends together, I could leave these loose for fringe. Size 8 needles and worsted weight yarn seems to work. I was using acrylic yarn, but Im sure a wool or wool blend would make a spectacular piece. This is what the two pieces should look like.(Picture is at bottom of this page, just scroll down. ) After you sew these two edges together, fold the top piece down along line x-y and the bottom piece left to right along line x-y. Points a to a and b to b will match up. Sew along seam a-b. You now should have a piece that looks like a diamond with a triangular notch cut out of one corner. This is your poncho. I make no promises with this pattern, make adjustments as you see fit. The one possible problem is the neck opening. It may need a gusset or trim around it to make it a snugger fit.
