OUR BACKGROUND

Bryce

Bryce was born in Miami and grew up in Boca Raton, FL. He was electrocuted in September 1972 resulting in the loss of his right hand. During the first year of recovery, rehab, and reconstructive surgery on his left hand he read C.S. Lewis' science fiction trilogy and eventually came to understand the gospel... having been "reconciled unto God through Christ" he began the lifetime journey of sanctification. He earned a BA in Humanities from FAU (Boca Raton, FL) in 1977 and an MA in Biblical Studies from Reformed Theological Seminary (Jackson, MS) in 1983.

Noreen

Noreen was born in Arlington, VA and also grew up in Boca. She became a Christian in 1969 through the ministry of Spanish River Presbyterian Church. After finishing high school in 1972 she studied for a semester at Covenant College but not knowing what she wanted "to be", returned to Boca. While working full-time she got involved in the coffeehouse ministry of Spanish River Pres. Church where she and Bryce sang together in one of the bands... they were married April 2, 1976.

The Kings

Time marched on... Bryce worked at Boca High School in Special Education and coaching soccer from 1974-81. Aaron was born in Sept. 1978 and Kelly in March 1980. In 1981 we moved to Jackson, MS to attend Reformed Theological Seminary. Niki was born in Aug. 1982 during the writing of Bryce's thesis. While at RTS he met two Mexicans (Moisés and Aarón Zapata) who were also studying at RTS. They were involved in starting a new Presbyterian seminary in Mérida. Moisés invited Bryce to come and teach.

After graduating in December 1983, we packed up and moved to Mérida. Our youngest, Sara, was born in August '84 during a brief return to the US. Over the next 4 years Bryce taught Greek, Biblical Theology, and other assorted courses at the San Pablo Seminary. He was also the Director of the School of Theology for about a year.

Due to a shift in our ministry focus, for the next several years we were involved primarily in youth outreach, evangelism and discipleship. Leadership training was an important aspect of this work and resulted in a group of young adults that began the Shalom Presbyterian Church. In 1994 we joined the Presbyterian Evangelistic Fellowship (PEF) and have been able to continue to broaden our work here in Mérida. In 1999 we organized SERFAM, a non-profit organization here in Mérida and now a satellite ministry of PEF.
