A man much smarter than I will ever be once gave me good advice
to remember as I grew older (which I didn't need telling twice),
His face looked carved from Granite, his wise eyes were of cobalt blue
these words of wisdom were to shape my life as over the years I grew.

"Never talk back to your Granny because she is is your Father's Mum
and she knows every nook and cranny where you stick your chewing gum,
She knows when you are telling fibs about homework that you "forgot"
for you've been the spitting image of you Daddy since you were a tot".

"If big school bullies try to pick fights with you, never run away
for if you don't stand up to evil in life you will never win the day.
Always show respect for others and be polite to people that you meet
and when one of your elders get's on a busy bus, offer them your seat".

"Always eat your vegetables like a good boy, but never lick your plate
and if you are told to be in by nightfall then never stay out late,
Never pee against the wind, if you don't want trousers that are wet
I think this is the best advice from me that you will ever get".

"Jaggy nettles will sting you on the legs when you are wearing shorts
and your Mammy will give you Castor oil when you feel out of sorts,
The horrible taste of it will make you screw your face up in disgust
but she knows what's good for you so her cure you will have to trust".

"The words of 'Please' and 'Thank you' are important things to say
and civility costs you nothing at all as you go your learning way,
Do not force your opinion on others if they think different from you
because everybody is entitled to their own personal point of view".

"I would like to think that you will end up a fine upstanding man
and that I may be of assistance to you in any way I can",
So I thanked him for his wisdom and promised never to turn out bad
I knew I'd never grow up as smart as him, my clever old Grand-dad!.
