This all powerful Highland Clan took it's name from Donald, grandson of Somerled, undisputed King of the Isles. The crest badge is a hand in armour holding a Cross Crosslett, and the Motto 'By Sea and by Land'.
Angus Og, brother of the Clan chief, was a supporter of King Robert The Bruce. He marched on Bannock~Burn Fields with his MacDonald warriors enabling The Bruce to defeat the English army.
The MacDonald's of Glencoe will be remembered by Historians as the victims of the "Massacre of Glencoe". In February 1692 nearly 40 were slain in bed by redcoats acting on orders.
Of Norse Ancestry, this Island Clan eventually was so numerous, and their prowess in the field of battle almost ledgendary, their Chief was able to elect himself Lord of the Isles without fear.
