Occupations of People:
Mansehra has fertile land and suitable and people are hard working.
Agriculture naturally, is their major occupation. The people's economy is mainly, dependent upon the agriculture and other related supplementary occupation, such as cattle breeding, Poultry farming, fishery, woodcutting and marketing and other agro-based industries. But the role of trade, industry and govt: service is not to be ignored. Here is an account of some important occupation of the people.
AGRICULTURE:
The number of big land owners in this district is small. Most of the land is owned by big landlords, Jagirdars and Nawabs. Share cropping tenancy system has prevailed here. There are various types of lands which produce one to three crops in a year. The formers of irrigated land also grow vegetables. The Tobacco is a major cash crop of the area. Tea plantation is in experimental stages and in some areas its cultivation has proved a successful. Before the 80's poppy cultivation was also common in Kala Dhaka but now it is banned.
FORESTRY (Wood-cutting and selling):
Forest is termed as the Green Gold by the economists. Land-lords and Politicians who own these forests try their utmost to gain more and more benefits from the consequently they are destroying the forests. But there is another side of picture; a large population of this district is earning their livelihood from wood cutting and timber trade.
POULTRY & FISH FARMING:
Besides the domestic poultry and the fishing from the rivers there are several poultry and fish farms for their breeding on commercial scale. It is an important source of income and now has gained a status of the industry in the rural area of the district.
CATTLE BREEDING:
Cattle breeding is the most popular occupation in Mansehra. Most of the people live in the villages and they have one or two cattle but there are also nomadic tribes, who rear goats, sheeps and buffaloes in large number. They go to hills and meadows in summer while return to plains in the winter season.
OVERSEAS EMPLOYMENT:
The people of this area are strong, stout, able, and hard working. So they are preferred in the overseas employment. They improve their financial condition, besides earning foreign exchange for their country. The job opportunities in the Middle East contributes largely to their economic condition as well as their status in society.
BUSINESS & TRADE:
Business is an old profession in this area. From a small trader to a high level businessman, everyone seem economically stable and well off Trade and commerce in this area consist of many diverse articles of daily use and also export of some local products and raw material.
GOVERNMENT SERVICES:
Service in the government departments such as the police, army, and education is much sought after by the people.
INDUSTRIAL LABOUR:
The hardworking people of Mansehra also migrate industrial areas of the country, in search of employment. They also contribute largely to the industrial production in the shape of labour, engineering and management all over the country. Besides a small industrial estate at Mansehra, there are also some industrial units scattered all over the district.
CROP SHARING OCCUPANCY:
Besides these professions and occupations in the present time, there is also a traditional system of employment which wholly depends upon the agriculture products. Various artisans are employed in the village on the crop-reward This is. Tenant, Barber, Carpenter, black smith, cobbler, ware bearer and other such like professionals are rewarded with a share in the crops.
