                    The Mansehra District is a part of Hazara Division in N.W.F.P. It is boarded to the North by District Kohistan and Diamer district, to the South by Abbottabad , to the East by Muzzafarabad district of Azad Jammu and Kashmir and to the West by Swat district. Mansehra lies at the base of the Himalayas. It is located between 34-15 and 35-12 North latitudes and 72-50 and 74-07 East longitudes.

          Mansehra district comprises of three Tehsils, Mansehra, Oghi and Balakot. Another Tehsil Batagram has been upgraded to the status of district. Now the area of district is 5398 square Km. An additional area of about 1000 sq. Km of Kala Dhaka, a Provincially Administered Tribal Area is in the administrative jurisdiction of district authorities. The area is considered as an integral part of Mansehra district, so the total area of district is 6398 sq. Km.

           According to the census report of 1998, the total population of the area now included in the district is 1,153,000 out of which 571,881(49.60 %) are male and 580,958(50.40 %) are female, so the male-female ratio is 51:49. The rural-urban distribution is 90:10 e. g only 61,100 person were living in urban areas in 1998. Population density is 252 per Sq. Km , while the annual growth rate is 2.40%.

            The distribution of population in its various regions is as follow:

1.    Mansehra including Oghi Tehsil 1934600 in the total area of 4495   sq.Km.

2.    Balakot Tehsil 654300 in the area of about 903 sq.Km.

3.    Tribal area of Kala Dhaka 83927 in the area of about 1000 sq.Km.

                In the year 2002 population of the district was estimated 1-3 million of which 18% urban. According to the survey of Mansehra village support project this population lives in 3782 settlements (villages).

               Mansehra is an important strategic region. It is bounded by two sensitive zones, Kashmir and the Northern areas of Pakistan. Siachen Glacier is not far away from this district. one of the greatest trade route of the world, the Karakuram Highway (KKH) passes through this district which provides the only land link with China and Central Asia.
