She stood at the railing of the deck, staring out over the back garden and pool of the party host's house. The moon was thinly veiled by clouds, but its ambient light reflected in the water and faintly lit up areas the indoor lights couldn't reach. Back inside, away from where she stood, were all the popular people, the ones she didn't know and didn't want to talk to.

She shouldn't have been invited; a friend of hers was friends with the host, and was trying to do her a favor. "Come on" the friend had said. "Come to the party, make an attempt at having a social life, please?" Reluctantly, she had agreed. The first few minutes were okay. People said hi, cooed at her Halloween costume, talked to her for a bit. Then they merged back into their separate cliches, leaving her on the outside as before. So she went out on the deck.

It was a very pleasant night for October, an Indian summer with lows in the sixties. Luckily so, because her costume consisted of solely jean shorts and a short yellow t-shirt, with a pair of red suspenders tacked on for decoration. As it was, she was pleasantly cool, and she could have stayed out there watching the stars all night.

She felt rather than heard someone else come up behind her, then stand next to her. Tearing her daydreaming gaze out of the skies, she laid it on the hand resting on the rail next to her. It was large, larger than hers, and mostly covered by a green, fingerless glove.

Startled, she followed the hand up to the body of the person it belonged to. He heard her sharp intake of breath, turned towards her, and grinned. "I didn't think you'd take the dare, 'Misty.'"

She looked down at her costume and cracked a grin herself. "Yes, well, dressing like this for Halloween was harmless compared to your usual wild schemes." She plucked at his costume, the vest showing no hint of its blue color in the faint light. She knew it was, though. "I'm surprised that you went through with the counter-dare, though."

He might have turned slightly red, though it was hard to tell in the light. "I feel really silly dressed like this."

"Nuh uh. You aren't the one carrying around a stuffed Togepi." She changed the subject. "How did you get invited here? I thought I was the only one of the dweeb crowd to get in."

"Eh, you know, friend of a friend nabbed an invite for me," he replied, making vague hand gestures.

"Oh. Me too."

They both fell into a comfortable silence, watching the sky, lost in thought.

"Alison-"

"Blake-"

"Yes?" they replied simultaneously.

"You first," grinned Alison sheepishly, looking down at her shoes.

"I was just thinking how it was kind of funny that we both ended up doing this. You dressed as Misty, me as Ash... We owe each other a bag of candy corn, actually."

She ignored the forced joke. "That's about the same thing I was thinking."

He laid a hand over hers. "I can't help but remember all those fanfics you sent me. This feels almost unreal, like I'm just dreaming. Know what I mean?"

She slipped her fingers through his. "I think I know exactly what you mean, Blake."

"Then you won't kill me if I end the 'fic?"

She shook her head. The pair moved closer, and their lips met in a first kiss as sweet as the moonlight emerging from behind its cloud cover. Inside the house, teenagers partied on, while the couple outside broke their kiss and leaned on the deck railing side by side, oblivious to everything but the night and each other.
