Floyd Mayweather Jr. was born on February 24, 1977 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He is son of '70s and '80s welterweight contender Floyd Mayweather, who was serving 66 months in a federal prison for drug trafficking. But he punches more like his uncle, former two-divisions world champion Roger Mayweather.
From the moment he was born, his destiny was to become a
boxer. "When I was in the crib, I was already throwing punches. Then, as I grew,
I started throwing punches at various objects, such as doorknobs. I first put on
the gloves when I was seven or eight years old," states the fighter nicknamed
"Pretty Boy."
As an amateur, Mayweather put together an 84-6 overall record, fighting as a
126-pounder. He won the national Golden Gloves championships in 1993, 1994 and
1996. In 1995 he won the National Police Athletic League (PAL) championship and
was United States Champion as well. It was around this period of time,
Mayweather was given his "Pretty Boy" nickname. "I got that name not because of
my looks, but because when my fights finished, I never came out cut or bruised.
My amateur teammates gave me the name," he said.
To qualify for the 1996 USA Olympic team, he twice defeated Las Vegas born Augie
Sanchez in the box-offs. In the Olympic games, he stopped Bakhityar Tilefanov of
Kazakhstan in the second round; scored a decision over Arthur Gevorgyan of
Armenia, 16-13; and stunned
Lorenzo Aragon of Cuba, 12-11. His victory over
Aragon spelled the first time an American fighter had defeated a Cuban in 20
years. In his next fight, he lost to Serafin Todorov of Bulgaria, 12-11, in a
controversial decision which resulted in a U.S. protest of the cards.
Mayweather vividly remembers that robbery and assures his fans that it has made
him a better fighter. "Being robbed is part of boxing, both in the amateurs and
the pros. I am just one of many Americans that have been cheated out of a gold
medal. Roy Jones got robbed, Michael Carbajal got robbed, and so did Evander
Holyfield and Fernando Vargas. Being robbed just made me go into the pro ranks
hungrier and more determined," he said.
