Audley Hugh Harrison was the first Briton to win an Olympic gold medal in the Superheavyweight division since its inception in 1984. He was also the first Briton to take the gold in boxing in 32 years, and the first at the highest weight class since 1920.

“Boxing fans and the media have waited for me to step up and challenge the best in the world, and now we’re ready – and I mean immediately,” said Harrison. “So once again I will let everyone know, including Calvin Brock, that I’m ready, willing, and anxious to fight him next and to let my actions speak louder than my words. Only then will the true future of the heavyweight division emerge,” said Harrison.

He turned professional soon after his Olympic victory, however his progress through the ranks has been carefully guided and therefore slow. As of the November 2005, his professional ring record is 19 wins (14 by knockout) in 19 contests. He also the current holder the fringe WBF Heavyweight championship belt. He won the title via a fourth round knockout of Dutchman Richel Hersisia on March 20, 2004 at Wembley Arena in London.

Audley Harrison went on to face Julius Francis on May 8,2004 defeating him via a 12 round unanimous decision victory. He then defended his WBF title for a second time, scoring a ninth round technical knockout victory over Tomasz Bonin on June 19, 2004. After suffering a serious ligament tear in his left hand, requiring subsequent hand surgery in New York, he was forced to put his career on hold for almost a year.

After relocating permanently to the US for the remainder of 2005, he finally took on an American boxer called Robert Davis on June 9, 2005 at the Pechanga Entertainment Center in Temecula, CA. After a cautious start, Harrison methodically broke Davis down, before sending him reeling against the ropes after several jolting left crosses. The fight was stopped in the seventh round via a technical knockout.

After gaining rapid exposure in the US with this victory, he decided to fight Robert Wiggins, a man who had previously lost very close decisions to Monte Barrett, a former WBC interim title challenger, and DaVaryll Williamson the current IBF mandatory challenger; having broken the latter's jaw in their 2003 fight. Harrison dominated Wiggins from the outset, keeping him on the outside of his long southpaw jab. He floored Wiggins with a big left cross in the 4th round, ending the round with a flurry of punches, that sent Wiggins wobbling back to his corner. Wiggins' trainer stopped the fight, awarding Harrison a technical knockout victory in the 4th round.

His first professional defeat was to Danny Williams on December 10, 2005. Losing on a split decision after going the distance for the vacant title of Commonwealth Champion.
