The youngest of four brothers and four sisters, he supported himself by pumping airplane fuel and as a certified swim instructor who worked summers as a lifeguard.
Began boxing at age 8 when he entered a Pee Wee tournament.
Earned his position on the 1984 United States Olympic squad by beating world amateur champion Ricky Womack twice in two days at the Olympic Box-offs and then caught the attention of everyone in Los Angeles when he knocked out his first three opponents.
Midway through the semifinal bout of the 1984 Olympics, the referee called break and at the same time Holyfield hit his opponent Kevin Barry of New Zealand with a left hook, knocking Barry out cold. He was disqualified after a short debate denying him the opportunity to fight for the gold medal.
The International Olympic Committee then suspended their own rules and awarded Holyfield the bronze medal amid controversy. He was the hard luck story of the 1984 Olympics.
Of Olympics, he has said "I get a warm feeling when I think about the Olympics,"..."It is the ultimate thing. It is like a championship fight."
