| Gathering ACCURATE data is essential for good scientific experimentation. This lab will introduce students to the process of using data loggers and data probes to gather and present information for evaluation: |
| Unit Description Sheet |
| STANDARDS: Investigation & Experimentation--Scientific progress is made by asking meaningful questions and conducting careful investigations. As a basis of understanding this concept, and to address the content in the other four science strands, students should developtheir own questions and perform investigations. Students will: a. select and use appropriate tools and technology to perform tests, collect data, analyze relationships, and display data. Students may earn 1/2 credit in Life Science or Physical Science for successful project completion--deadline for completion is May 20th, 2005. |
| 1. View the STUDENT INTRODUCTION at the iScience Project site & write out/answer/ attach answers to the following questions: SITE: http://www.iscienceproject.com/what_how/5624_iscienceProject.html a. What is a HOBO data logger? b. How does a HOBO work? c. Name of one PRO who uses a HOBO. d. How could you use a HOBO in a science project? e. What can you win? 2. Project--compare the temperature inside of the classroom with the temperature outside of the classroom along with the amount of time the heater or air conditioner is on. 3. Review and analyze the graph created by the HOBO logger on 5/4/05 (11:00 A.M. until 4:00 P.M.) Get a copy of the graph from Steve, then complete the following: a. What does line "c:1" represent? What does line "c:*4" represent? b. Compare and contrast the lines--how are they the same? How are they different? c. HOBO also measured light intensity and relative humidity. Would that information be helpful to us? Why or why not? 4. The HOBO can collect data that would be impossible (inside of a refrigerator) or time consuming (what we did in class) for us to do. Can you think of a way we could use the HOBO to collect data that might be helpful for us here at school? Write a paragraph describing your idea. | 5. Take a look at ideas other high school students & teachers have submitted: http://www.iscienceproject.com/labs/6481_highschoollabs.html List the title here and print the activity. Write a paragraph and attach: "I think this is a good activity because..." On or before 5/20/05, take completed paperwork to Steve |
