Chop large dried plant parts, such as roots, bark or thick stems, into small pieces, then crush these or dried leaves and flowers with a mortar and pestle,or reduce them to powder in a coffee grinder.Powder can be added to drinks and soups or sprinkled on food.
These may be useful ways to presude children to take herbs. They are also soothing for coughs.Syrups are simple to make :combine 1-1/4pints(600ml) of boiling water with 2lbs (900g) of sugar in a pan, bring back to a boil, stirring continuously, turn off the heat as soon as it starts to boil .Mix the resulting syrup base with the reguired TINCTURE(see info on what a tincture is,page1 ) .Mix three parts syrup with one part tincture and store in the refrigerator. There are many ways to make a syurp.Use the links on Pecan Herb Home page to find websites with many recipes and information.
A compress is useful for applying an herbal remedy externally to the skin. For a hot compress, soak a clean cotton cloth in a hot decoction(see info on what a decoction is,page 1)or infusion and apply it to the affected part as hot as can be tolerated.Cover the compress with plastic wrap and a folded towel or blanket to maintain the heat. When cooled, either replace with another hot compress or apply a hot -water bottle over the plastic wrap.Prepare a cold compress in the same way but allow it to cool before applying.
A poultice is similar to a compress except that plant parts are used rather than liquid .Mash or crush fresh plant parts and either heat in a pot over boiling water or mix with a small amount of boiling water. Apply the pulp directly to the skin,as hot as can be tolerated, holding it in place with a gauze bandage. If using a dried herb, first powder it and make a paste with a little boiling water. If the paste is liable to irritate the skin, apply it between two layers of cloth. Poultices are generally more active than a compress. They are used to stimulate circulation, soothe aches and pains or draw impurities out through the skin, depending on the herb chosen.A poultice will introduce the active parts of the herb into the body without stressing or being affected by the digestive tract before reaching their target area.
