Tagor is a city with a certain history. Long ago they were tormented by a lich who sought to bring the world some more.. entropy. As the story goes, they were saved by a single man. A brave soul who ended up sacrificing himself for the greater good. This gave birth to the tradition of a single person defending Tagor, the one known as Sheriff.
This tradition served them well for a while. The solitary lawman was able to keep the small frontier town orderly and crime to a minimum. One day, the town was visited by a criminal most cunning. The armor store was robbed of goods and the sheriff in office failed to capture him. Soon thereafter, the higgler was robbed of goods and moneys, and again the perpetrator eluded capture.
The sheriff was stumped. After every crime, he gave pursuit. Inevitably, the criminal would duck into some alleyway or some behind some other cover. When the sheriff neared the spot, he would suddenly see his quarry some distance away, in plain sight. It was as if he could teleport, but Gramail will not bend space for criminals.
Tagor held a town meeting to discuss the inadequacies of their lawman. The sheriff pleaded for more time, he would figure out this enigma and place the thief behind bars, where he belonged. The townspeople had run out of patience, however, and wanted a new sheriff to defend them. And so, after much debate, it was decided that Tagor's Sheriff needed.. help. Twelve Deputies were sworn in, to both help in the apprehension of the master thief, but also to watch the sheriff for any signs of inadequacy.
When next Tagor's public enemy number one struck, things were different. With the deputies stationed all over town, the thief was hard pressed to find a spot to drop out of sight and reappear elsewhere. The tables were turned. Every time the wily rogue managed to elude one deputy, there was another to take their place. The arrest was made as soon as the befuddled brigand collapsed from exhaustion.
As it turned out, it was not just one criminal, but a pair of brothers, who were committing all the crimes. Whenever the sheriff thought he had one cornered, the other would draw his attention away from his sibling. Most cunning, but no so effective against twenty-six eyes. The deputies and their sheriff had managed to capture both of them in short order. The highly controversial deputy plan had proved its worth. And so Tagor learned a lesson we all know so well:
We all can use a little help now and again.
