age out
dci members may only be as old as 22, after this they may no longer participate, and therefore 'age out.' can also be a person- 'she was a 1998 age out.'

angelica, don
the man who got george hopkins to agree to be the director of the cadets.

aungst, tom
percussion caption head/arranger 1993-

banquet
a wrap up of the previous season, usually held during the first camp weekend.

basics ; circle drill
the part of the marching rehearsal meant to improve basic marching technique. also used to build cardiovascular endurance. can get to be inane and pointless after too long.

big apple
the title of the cadets' 1999 show; a piece by johan de meij

blue devils
ten time dci world champions; based in concord, california [website]

buckle
a feature of the cadets' uniform. a shiny metal object worn on the chest.

bugle
a brass instrument pitched in G. [i know this is not the real definition, but for the purposes of this site, it works well.]

cadet

camp
a once a month weekend rehearsal held in the winter months at the lovely bergenfield vo-tech high school

cadillac of the skies
a ballad that the cadets perform at concerts/encores. very emotional.

cipriani, gino

the man who revitalized the cadets brass section with a new way to play, and a new attitude.

clinic
a rehearsal where band kids watch.

contra
a tuba bugle, if you will. it is worn on the left shoulder, making visibility to the left impossible for the performer. also known as 'trash can'.

dci atlantic
the end of the 'first tour' around july 10. all of the members of drum corps atlantic compete.

disney millennium celebration
music used for the cadets 2000 program. essentially the background music to a laser show at epcot. available on compact disc.

dotbook
a small notebook containing all of an individual members coordinates- where am i supposed to be? this item takes WAY TOO MUCH time to create, and it is often easier simply to memorize all pertinent information than to write out 100+ individual pages.

east!
the chant that arose after rocky point holiday at 1983 finals. the cadets yelled this after the brass feature in 2000, while they were doing a judo kick.

encore performance
after a show, the winning corps may elect to perform a concert of some sort. at dci finals the world champion does their complete show [marching and playing] again.

floor time
'getting' to sleep on a floor in a horizontal position on tour. a rarity [some years]

folded
when a corps 'dies' due to financial or internal issues

free day
a rare tour day that includes no rehearsal, or anything drum corps related, for that matter.

a formation used for the brass line when not marching. emplyed in warm ups, sectional rehearsals.

the part that connects the harness to the quads or snares

magic of orlando
a corps from orlando. the organization still exists, but there has not been a corps on the field since 1999. an outcropping of suncoast after it folded.

o holy name;holy name
the cadets corps song. it is sung by the corps before every field performance. no member may sing it without the presence of the rest of the cadets. age-out members sing the second strain a fifth above the rest. [words]

phantom regiment
a corps from rockford, illinois that specializes in classical/neoclassial/romantic era music. [website]

rehearsal day
a tour day with no show. 8-10 or more hours of rehearsal.

retreat
the finale of a dci show. all of the competing corps stand on the field and await announcement of scores.

rocky point holiday
played by the cadets in 1982 and 1983. the drill marched to it in 1983 was the beginning of the revolutionary zingali drill. portions played in concert by the cadets 2000-

run through
the very last part of rehearsal; a full run of the show.

shako
headgear worn by the cadets. inspired by the us military academy in west point. the brim should be pulled down so that a member can fit two [read: one] fingers between it and his nose. often pulled down lower for retreat, where anonymity is desired. [and you feel like a bad ass]

show day
a normal tour day with a show at night. usually 4-6 hours of rehearsal, then the corps travels to the show site, warms up, and performs before leaving for the next town.

snack pack

spirit [of atlanta]
a corps formerly from atlanta, now from jacksonville, alabama. the name sake of the dci high brass trophy taught her. [jim ott] [website]

spring training
one month of extremely intense rehearsals in preperation for the tour. held at allentown college in allentown, pa

stonehenge
title of the cadets' 1998 program based upon a piece by jan van der roost

suncoast sound
a corps from largo, florida. marc sylvester wrote their drill in 1988. suncoast no longer exists.

one of the men who revolutionized marching in the early 80s. partly responsible for the invention of the roll step. one of the most unique figures in all of drum corps. recently married.

also called quads; a set of usually four battery drums that have definite tones.

warm up
the first thing the corps does after arriving at a show site. for the brass line, this is a way to get hyped for the show by playing loud, and looking good.
