West Monroe Police booked a 29 - year - old West Monroe man Wednesday in the shooting death of another West Monroe resident,. CHARLES W. WALKER, 29 of 2305 Trenton, Apt. A, West Monroe was being held in the Ouachita Parish Jail in connection with the DEATH of BILLY RAY MERCIER, 31 of ( 911 )Crosley St. West Monroe. Officials said a formal charge of murder will be filed by the Ouachita Parish district attorney's office and Walker would remain in the parish jail on a warrant and be bound over to the grand jury for further action.
Police Chief Johnny B. Mitchell said the department received a call reporting a shooting at 2305 Trenton at 2:35 a.m. Mercier was found in the apartment suffering a gun shot wound in the stomach and was taken to St. Francis Hospital where he was pronounced DEAD on arrival. Police said the weapon was a 30-30- caliber rifle. A West Monroe patrolman stopped Walker about a mile from the apartment only minutes after the shooting. The officer was in process of arresting Walker for driving while intoxicants, negligent operation of a vehicle and disturbing the peace, when he was radioed concerning the shooting.
Funeral services for MY FATHER was at 3 p.m. in the chapel of Mulhearn Funeral Home in West Monroe with the Rev. Ralph Fowler officiating. Burial was held at Crossroads Cemetery near Crossett, Ark.
